ROAD BOARDS.
OXFORD.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Road Board of the above district was held at the office last week. Present: Messrs Sladdin (chairman), Wilson Fisher, Sedcole and Garaman.
Mr Wm Heyward waited on the Board, relative to the bad state of the road leading to his sawmill, and was informed that steps would be taken for shingling the road _ as soon as the state of tbe weather allowed it. Messrs Grimwood, Quigley, and O’Connor waited on the Board, relative to the water flowing through Pearson’s Swamp damaging their crops, and were informed that steps would be taken for remedying the complaint as soon as arrangements could be made with Mr H. B. Johnston for cutting a drain to carry the water into tbe Eyre. Mr D. Fisher waited on the Board with a petition numerously signed, praying the Board to take some steps for the more efficient management of the Oxford pound. The petition was received. Tenders were considered for forming about 5 chains of the Harewood-road by Riccarton and laying down a culvert, and one accepted. A deputation of immigrants waited on the Board, and were informed that temporary employment would be found on the roads for them, the clerk being instructed to point out the work on Monday.
The clerk reported having inspected the crossing of the creeks westward of Mr Brian’s according to instructions. The Board decided to postpone the matter for further consideration, owing to the expensiveness of the required work. The clerk also reported that the various contracts for metalling were progressing favorably.
After a lengthened discussion on various matters, payments to the amount of £ll3 were passed and paid, and the Board adjourned.
LITTLE RIVER.
A meeting of this Board was held on Friday, June sth. Present—All the members. The minutes of last meeting were confirmed.
It was resolved that the member for the district in the Provincial Council be requested to urge upon the Government the necessity for granting a further sum to meet the requirements of the district ; and to point out that the main road between Christchurch and Akaroa absorbs all the money, leaving nothing for branch lines of road.
Letters were received from the Secretary for Public Works relative to workmen’s cottages ; from Mr James Kimber, relative to some work required on the lower Lincoln road near Streeter’s. It was decided that the clerk report upon this. Mr Bcvaus had an interview with the Board about some necessary work on the road up the Kaituna Valley. Mr Sevan’s was informed that the clerk would see to it. It was resolved in view of the present state of the funds to allow any further contracts to stand over for the present. It was decided to defer the opening of tenders for workmen’s cottages until the 12th instant.
It was resolved that a rate of 6d in the £ on all rateable property in the district be levied.
The Board decided to call for tenders for an additional cottage to be placed in the Kaituna to be used as a Road Board Office. The sites for the cottages were determined upon, and also reserves for quarry purposes, to be pointed oul to the Government. Accounts to the amount of £156 9s 6d were passed, and the Board adjourned.
A meeting of this Board was held on the 12th inst. Present—Messrs Allan (chairman), Coop, Parkinson, and Tanner. Tenders were received for the erection of workmen’s cottages in the district, and it was resolved that a tender be recommended to the Provincial Government for acceptance. The Board also concluded to accept one to build an additional cottage in Kaituna Valley.
It was decided that the chairman write to Mi Potts, the member for the district, with reference to provincial grant, and also to get him to request the Government to place on the table of the House Mr White’s authority for cutting timber on the railway reserve and roads in the district. It was resolved that Mr Cotton be requested to lay out the line of road from the foot of Lake Forsyth across Birdling’s Flat, and that the chairman write to him on the subject. The clerk was ordered to engage a man to repair the road over the Ahuriri saddles during the winter. The Board then adjourned.
