COMMERCIAL.

Melbourne,— The “Argus” of May 23rd reports:—ln the import markets general trade has been without animation throughout the day, and doubtless the wretched state of the weather has had something to „.do with this. Breadstuff s are unaltered. Fine brands of flour are firm at £l4 7s 6d for parcels, and we have heard of only one line having been placed at the price. Bakers’ lots are in moderate request at £l4 17s 6d to £ls, bags included. Wheat maintains a steady quotation of 6s 6d to 6s 8d for good to prime samples. There is nothing new to report in regard to oats. Sales can be made at prices rising from 5s to 5s Bd, according to quality. In maize nothing can be done until the Sydney steamer comes forward with f arther supplies. Candles are coming more into notice. A line of 1000 boxes D.R.O.’s has been sold in bond at equal to 11 |Jd, duty paid. * 600 boxes, a mixed parcel of Brandon’s and Gouda’s, have also changed Lauds at ll jd. Brandies are in as much favor as ever, and buyers seem to show as much readiness to operate as at the, very commencement of the speculation. The principal feature in to-day’s trade is the business done in this spirit. A parcel of 50 hhds. and 260 quarters dark Martell’s brandy, 1872, was taken up at 9s 6d, 9s 7Jd, and 9s 9d. Equal to 200 hhds Hennessy’s 1872 were placed at 10s 9d and l()s 10£d ; 60 hhds and 150 quarters Martell’s 1869 vintage found a purchaser on privat ■ terms, A very full figure is stated to have been paid. A small parcel of Otaid’s 1872 was quitted at 9s Ijd. We also learn of the disposal of a line of 1300 cases Otard’s at a price supporting our quotation of 25s 6d to 26s for small lots, A shipment of Edmonds’ pig brand stout has been sold at 13s. Adelaide. —The following telegrams appear in the “ Argus” :—May 18th. — Wheat is enquired for at 5s 9<l. 20th.—Wheat is firmer, and sales have been made at 5s lOd. 23rd. —Two thousand tons of breadstuffs were exported during the week.
