Sales—National Bank, Cos Cel ; Prince, 19s Gd ; Queen of Thames, 6s (id. Buyers— National Bank, 65s ; Montanis, 32s ; Caledonian, £10; Bird in Hand, 345. A fire at Newmarket destroyed four buildings—M‘Neil, baker, owned by Wrigley, insured in the South British for £250, in the Norwich Union £SO ; Witherford, ironmonger, stock,£2oo in the New Zealand, and buildings £209 in South British and £l5O in New Zealand ; Jenkins, draper, stock, £250 in the New Zealand ; Morgan’s buildings, £2OO in the New Zealand, £260 on the stock in the Norwich Union. A quantity of goods was saved, but it is estimated that the insurances will not nearly cover the loss. The fire is believed to have originated in Witherford’s workshop. Mr Macfarlane is a candidate for Waiteraata. The Government propose to withdraw the rating clauses of the Education Bill, and substitute a uniform household tax of a pound, a bachelor tax of 10s, and capitation of 10s per child attending schools to four in one family. This is a temporary arrangement to defray the cost this year. A new system, on the basis of a property tax, will be introduced next year. Mr Von der Heyde, of the firm of Henderson and Macfarlane, is a candidate to represent Waitcmata, Grahamstown, June 2. There was a fearful north-west gale last night, doing extensive damage. Three coasting vessels made breaches through the wharf known as Curtis’. The sea wall from Grahamstown to Tararu was considerably damaged, and a quantity of railway ballast washed away. The Tararu wharf was nearly destroyed, and the beach strewn with timber. One cutter now lies high and dry
in the main stream, at Grahamstown. It is scarcely possible to present any estimate of the extent of the damage.
Wellington, June 2. Arrived—Fiery Cross, from Lyttelton. Sailed—Luna, on a lighthouse cruise, Twenty-five pounds have been subscribed for the crew of the Southesk to buy their clothes. A subscription list has also been started for the captain amongst the master mariners. The remains of the wreck and two boats were sold to-day by auction for £ls.
