A heavy gale yesterday swamped numbers of small craft, and injured otters. There was no serious casualty. The Star of the South’s news contains particulars of the murder of Ross Lewin, a planter at Tanna. He was shot by a native in revenge for shooting a pig in his garden. Ho requested his body to bo buried at sea, lest the natives should dig it up. His wife went out with a boat to comply with his wish, when it was driven away by a gale, After enduring great privation she was picked up by the schooner Donald McLean on a labor cruise. . Bloodshed had occurred ou the vessel previously, the mate having been killed with an axe by a native sailor, aud shot through the mouth with poisoned arrows, two others were wounded. New Plymouth, June 1.
The session of the Provincial Council has closed. No immigration agent has been appointed yet. The Government have asked the Council to allow them further time to make enquiries regarding the qualification of the gentleman named. Wellington, June 1.
The Court of Appeal has delu-cred judgment in the case of the Attorney-General Mr Bunny. The demurrer was overruled on all points with costs. The first point was the validity of the warrant. It It was held that the warrant was a bad one under the 25th clause of the Constitution Act, owing to the (Superintendent delegating his own constitutional powers to another, which he had no right to do. It was his duty to issue a warrant for every payment. The second point was whether the Comt had jurisdiction at all in the matter. A large number of precedent cases were cited, and the Court decided that it had the power. The third point raised by Mr Travers was, tha necessity of a relator. The Court held that the introduction of a relator in the present case was unnecessary, and would have been improper. The fourth point was, ought the Superintendent’s name to have been worded with that of Provincial Treasurer, and it was ruled that it was not necessary, the course adopted being the proper one. Hebfton, June 1. The Wealth of Nation’s twenty-six days’ crushing, has yielded IliO ounces of melted gold. A dividend of 2s has been declared. Wellington, June 2. The Government have advices of the sale in London of £(J72,001) of 4£ per cent, debentures nominally at 1)8, but with allowances for interest, which reduces the price to £96 9s sd. This is part of the one and a half millions which had been offered for sale. The balance is to be sold at same price. Mr McKirdy, of Wellington, is the successful tenderer for the Mungaroa contract, on the Mastcrton line. Eight miles of heavy cutting will have to be done, including two tunnels. The price is £5500 per mile. There were eight unsuccessful tenderers. The highest being £BOOO per mile In the General Synod, Mr Sewell moved, regarding the Bishopric of Dunedin—“ That the Synod, having- carefully examined the circumstances under which Dr Jenner claims to be first Bishop of the See of Dunedin, declares that Dr Jenner, not having been appointed in accordance with the laws of the Church in New Zealand, ought not to be recognised as first bishop; and the Synod doth thereby recognise the Bev Samuel Tarratt Neville, D.D., as present and first Bishop of Dunedin; and the motion was agreed to. Dunedin, June 2. The provincial balance-sheet shows the estimated receipts to be £482,718, the actual being £41)2,800. The expenditure £-104.000 for the financial year ending in March.
