BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board of Education met yesterday afternoon at three o’clock. Present—Messrs 0. C. Bowen (chairman) Kennaway, W. Montgomery, A. C. Knight and J. N. Tosswill. THE ESTIMATES. The Board were occupied during the greater part of the sitting in the consideration of estimates to be submitted to the Government of money required by the Board for the nine months ending 31st March, 1875, THE BOOK DEPOT. The following resolution was agreed to : “ That the Government be requested to bring in a bill to repeal clause 70. the Education Ordinance, 1874,” which places the depot for books and apparatus under the charge of the chairman of the Board EAST CHRISTCHURCH. A letter was read from Mr Hill, master of the Avonside school, furnishing suggestions for the furniture of Bingsland school. The inspector’s report on the same subject was directed to be sent to the East Christchurch school committee. WEST OXFORD, The sum of £35 was passed for a well and fencing for the West Oxford school. KOWAI BUSH. Letter from the chairman of the committee, stating that Mr James B. Turner had been appointed as master. Referred to the inspector to report thereon. leeston. A letter was read from the Leeston sciiool committee, requesting the Board to establish a branch school at Doyloston. The consideration of this letter was postponed, SELWYN, A letter was read from the chairman of the committee, stating that notice had been given to Mr R. Pole to leave at the end of the present quarter, and stating that the Board wished to advertise for a married man as master, and also for a sewing mistress. A letter was read from Mr R. Pole, stating that the only complaint in the district was the want of an efficient sewing mistress ; there were several married women qualified for the work, and willing to accept the situation. The matter was postponed until next meeting, the inspector in the meantime to report thereon. KAIAPOI ISLAND NORTH, The sura of £53 10s was sanctioned for extras and fencing for the school. LINCOLN. A letter was read from the chairman of fire district committee, stating that Miss Isabella Perkins had been appointed ,as mistress. Approved, subject to Miss Perkins passing the usual examination. The Board then adjourned.
