VIOLENT QUAKE
RESIDENTS RUSH INTO STREETS. NO DAMAGE REPORTED. (Press Association.! WOODVILLE, Feb. 12. A violent earthquake occurred hero at 6.22 o’clock this evening._ it was preceded by a loud rumbling noise and continued for several sec. onds. The inhabitants rushed into the street in alarm, but no serious/ damage is reported. A further: shock of less violence occurred at 6.29 o’clock. Minor shocks have been experienced for several days. (Press Association.) DANNEVHIKE, Fob. 12. The. soverost" earthquake since t'.r big sliake on June 17 last, was ex-, perience-d here at 6.20 this evening, followed two minutes later by minor shocks. The show buddings swayed perceptibly. _ Window weights rattled and- electric light globes swung to and fro, tho kittor for about five minutes. Timid people rushed into tho open street from shops. Another sharp shock was felt tat 6.50.
TWO SHOCKS IN HAWKE’S BAY. buildings rocked. (Press Association.) NAPMR, Fob. 12. An earthquake starting gently, and increasing to considerable swaying motion, caused people . in Napier and Hastings to run into tho streets about 6.2-1 this evening. Tho tiremor lasted about hall a minute, and was followed six miutes later by another and less severe quake of'shorter duration. Scarcelv a chimney is loft- standing in Porangaliau township and district (on coast- oast of Waipukuvauj and those which did not I all are cracked. This area was jtlio worst severely shaken by the earthquake—at least, so far as Hawke’s Bav is concerned. The shock was the most severe experienced for over forty years and was accompanied, at Porangaliau. bv a distant roar and the severe jolting continued for tour or five minutes. The residents werealarmed and l-ushecl into the streets for safety. Hundreds .of pounds damage is said to have lieen done to houses. Crockery and furniture were thrown to the iloor with great force and smashed to pieces; several large trees were uprooted; and small cracks have appeared in the roads. The local stores and hotel are tile heaviest losers -and it will be some time before things are righted again. Several small shakes were felt this morning. No cases of injury have been reported.. Waipawa and Waipukurau people were also alarmed at the shock which, was quite severe (in those towns, hut no serious damage is re ported.

Tho sway was in aii oast to west direction. No damage is reported. POST OFFICE CLOCK BELLS RING JN MASTER TON. (Press Association.) MASTER TON, Feb. 12. A fairly violent shock of earthquake was felt here at 6.23 p.m. A series of rather jerky shakes last..' for about half a minute, followed by fainter tremors, dying away. The bells of the Post Office dock were rung lightly. No damage appears to have been done. A very slight earthquake shock was experienced in Gisborne at 6.23 last night. The shock was so slight that only the swinging of the electric light globes indicated a ’quake. - • ■. ■■
