Various road works in the current season’s programme of the Cook County Council will he commenced shortly, according to present plans. These works will he commenced, it is expected, within a few days.

A meeting of the Local Government Loans Board was held at the Government Buildings oil Triday, the following members being, present: Ale-ssrs. A. D. Park. Secretary to the Treasury (chairman); F. W. Furkert. C.AI.G.. Engineer-in-Chiei and Under-Secretary of the Public Works Department; R. -A. Anderson, a member of the Bluff Harbor Board: G. C. Godfrey, Secretary for Marine; W. .1. Holdsworth, chairman of the Auckland Electric-Power Board; G. A. Lewin, Town Clerk, Dunedin; and S. A. R. Along engineer to the Rangitike- County Council. Forty-four application s foi loans, totalling £717,187. were dealt with. .This figure included four renewal loans, amounting to £11)5,082, and four loan's amounting to £209.650 previously considered but not finally dealt with. Loans amounting to £581,846 were sanctioned, the balance, £135.332. being either declined or referred back to the local authority concerned for further consideration. The Loans Board also approved, under the powers conferred on it by the legislation last session, of one local authority making a donation of £IOO to an Aero Club in its district.—P.A.

Two Ngatapa residents were principals in a civil action, wherein damages were claimed for alleged assault, heard before. Air. P. H. Harper, S.AL, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The plaintiff was George Albert Papworrh (Mr. 1. S. Waucliop). farmer, who sought to recover from Joliji Breeze (Air. L. T. Burnard). railway surfaceman, £9 18s 6cl for medical expenses, £42 for the less of the use oi his right arm for seven weeks and £2O general damages, a total of £7l 18s 6d. Plaintiff’s story was that he and defendant wore formerly on good terms and the latter leased a grazing paddock to him. Oil November 11 plaintiff found his brother’s cows in the paddock. An argument arose over this and then defendant got plaintiff down, twisted his arms under him and began to punch his face. Plaintiff freed his right arm, but defendant secured another hold, twistea the arm again and broke the radius. —Dr. Harold Angell gave evidence regarding .the injury, while plaintih and Victor Percy' Fredericks testified to the remainder of the story. —Defendant’s account was that plaintiff struck him in the month and they then came to grips, plaintiff getting the worst of it. Defendant merely used sufficient force to keep plaintiff quiet and defend himself. Defendant and Edward Papworth, a brother of plaintiff, gave evidence on these lines.—Commenting that plaintiff, to succeed, must show that defendant was the aggressor, the Magistrate stated that this had. not been established and non-suited plaintiff. No costs were allowed defendant.
