BODY FOUND IN RIVER (Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Feb. 10. The body of a man of about Jo to 50 years of age was found in tho Manawatu River yesterday afternoon in a much-decomposed state. Tho identity of the deceased is not known, but there are. tattoo marks on the arm and an inscription, “Hands across the sea.” SCIENCE MASTER .DROWNED IN SURF (Press Association.) BLENHEIM, Feb. 10. William Cottermole Purdy, science master at Marlborough College, was drowned vesterday afternoon at White’s Bay. Purdy and a party were swimming in the surf when some of them got into a strong undertow. Purdv, Mr C. H. Miller. Miss London and a lad. were swept out in the breakers. The two latter got ashore after a great struggle, hut Purdv was observed to be floating. After floating half an hour Rurdy was washed ashore. Artificial inspiration was resorted to without sueccs for two hours. Purdy was a popular master, and the tragedy has cast quite a gloom over the comSnunity. • FARMER’S TRAGIC END. Charles Williams, a Murig elec trician, while working at Kamihon Chambers, Lambton Quay, s,, RP e( J and fell four floors down tie lilt well. Williams was assisting m the wirine of the lift well in the building, and was standing at tho entrance to the well on the fourth floor when in some unaccountable manner he slipped and fell to the bottom. It- so happened that at the time the floor of the well was being laid down over iron machinery, and Williams’ fall was broken to some extent bv his landing on a board Sstin- ‘in a slanting position against one nkio. A parpenter engaged in the work was hnndj, and he lifted the injured man out into the corridor. The City Ambulance was called and Williams was taken to the hospital sulfeeing from injuries to his back, abrasions to Ins left hand, and shocks.
