MARCH ]—Banks Peninsula R.C. 1, 3—Te Aroha J.C. 5, (i —Rangitikoi R.C. GISBORNE CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING MR !>. J. BARRY'S DAY IN THREE IVINNER,S OUT OF FIRST FOUR RACES SI N( 11 .ETON ’S. STEIi LIN (! V ICTORY IN THEi CUP . Ideal weather, good fields, and. a good track favored the Gisborne Racing Cluli for the conclusion of its siunmcr meeting at the Park racecourse on Saturday*. There was a large attendance, and patrons were keyed to a great height of excitement at tilt' close finishes in several of the events, a tribute to the work of the adjuster, Air Ulie Shannon, tlio club's deputy handienpper.

The feature of the meeting was undoubtedly tile triple crown secured by the popular president of : the Club, Air l). J. Barry, three'of . los horses winning in the lirst lour races. It is notable that Rich Harvest and his full brother Running Over, and also Singleton were all bred by Air Barry from his own st-»b lion Autumn. Needless to -say, Mr Barry was heartily congratulated on all sides, and this feeling was lully evident at the presentation of the Gisborne Gold Cup, which took place in the “birdcage” immediately following the race In asking his daughter. Afiss'Cush!a- Bright, to hand the trophy to Air Barry, the vice-presid-ent of the Club. Air 11. E. Bright, said ho was sure everyone' was delighted at Air Barry's success at the meeting (prolonged applause). This was particularly gratifying in view of the fact that the three horses that had won that day had 'been bred by Air Barry. Single ton’s win was meritorious also by the tact that lie was carrying a lot of weight. The speaker desired to congratulate the owner, tho trainer (Air H. Goseomb), and the rider (E. Keosing). Afiss Bright then presented the cup to Mr Barry and at the call of Air Bright cheers wore given for Air Barry, Air Goscomb. Air Kcesing, and also Singleton. Afr Barry in reply said he was more pleased at winning the Gisborne Cup than he would he at winning any other tropry in New Zealand. He' was proud, of Singleton, and he desired to pay a tribute to Mr ,Goseomb for his invaluable *work in training the horse, and to heartily .-'congratulate the jockey. Air. Jvoesing. As to the race itself, he always had a doubt that Te Awha would beat his horse. He thanked Air Bright for his complimentary remarks, and ,*gain expressed his pleasure at winning the cup. Further cheers for Air Barry concluded the proceedings. From a racing standpoint, perhaps the outstanding feature of the day was the success of Autumn’s stock. Autumn, as is well-known, was lor some years the property ul Air J)-. J. Barry, and was disposed of some few months ago-to Air A Dovory, ol Wairoa. A summary of the performances of Autumn’s progeny- on .Saturday is as follows: First. se»;mu* and third in the Juvenile (out of fc-ur representative*:, .first and third in the Taruhcru Hack (three representatives), first and second in the Trial Handicap (lour representatives), lirst in the Gold Cup (one representative), not represented in tho Second Highweight Handicap, first in the Awapuni Hack tune representative), no representative m the Bright Alemorial. On the day’s racing, therefore, Autumn s stock secured five firsts, two seconds and two thirds out of five races in which they were represented. On the the Scurry Handicap each day. Lor one first, Autumina, two seconds, Rich Harvest and Climatic, and two thirds, Little Wonder and .Manifest;. At "Wairoa last week Autumn’s stock came first, second and third in the Scurry Handicap each day. For nine day’s- racing; this record would be indeed hard to heat, or even to equal. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £12,272, compared with £13,867 on the second day last year, a decrease of £1595. The total for the meeting was £22,177 against £25.148 last year, ii decrease of £2971.

The most successful rider on Saturday was E. Kecsing with three winning, mounts, followed by Goldfinch with two. Keesing tops the list lor the meeting with three wins, followed by J. Nixon, P. Atkins, A. Tricklebank, and H, Goldfinch two each, and C, Stratton, H. Young, W. H.. Horne one eacli. Training honors for the meeting go to 11. Gosconib, of Taruheru, with three winners followed by A. ,0. Triclclcbank (Hastings). W. 3>. Tnrbull, two each, and J. Malone, H. S. Greene (Hastings), A. D l . Adams, Mrs W. D. Fenton, W. I). Young .(Napier), .1 W. Nixon and A. Harris, one each. ' ■ . j A. further evidence of the good feeling existing between sportsmen and the Press was exemplified on Saturday. After the race for, the Gold Gup, Mi* H. J. Barry, owner of the winner, Singleton, visited the Pressroom and generous hospitality was extended to the inmates. The toasts of “Singleton” and ‘TMu Barry” were honored with the utmost . enthusiasm, the latter being accompanied by three) cheers for the popular president. A. Fivers gave every satisfaction ; as jtidge,. and Mr Slap with’is work at the harrier , gaye not > He, slightest cause for complaint. The comfort of patrons. - was studied in 1 ' every w'ay by tbo club’s secrerarj*,
