GOVERNMENT PURCHASES

24,000 ACRES IN OTAGO BALLOT IN APRIL

(Press Association) WELLINGTON. Feb. 4. A total of 24,000 acres will he available for closer settlement as a result of the purchase the Government has concluded under the Land for Settlement Act, of the Wilden Estate, formerly owned by Mr It. L. Acton-Adams, and situated near Heriot, Otago. The Minister of Lands (the Hon. G. W. Forbes), said the property cofnpriscd 15,174 acres freehold, ad 8890 acres held under pastoral license. The lad is of excellent quality. The proposed number of subdivisions •is from 12 to 14. The land is first class grazing country, and a large portion of it is suitable for cropping. The stock carried prioi to the purchase by the Government was 18,340 ewes, 4320 dry sheep and 340 cattle.

The purchase price is not disclosed. Hie ballot will be held in tho second week in April. 4 Mr Forbes said the Government had now purchased under its closer settlement policy some 27 properties aggregating 50,000 acres. Hieso would provide 125 additional holdings, a number of which had already been selected
