THE NEW HARBOR
PROGRESS OF THE WORKS, ENGINEER’S REPORT. The progress of various sections of the harbor construction works in the past month was reviewed by the engineer Air. R. in a report presented to the Harbor Board yesterday. The report is as follows: DIVERSION CUT. DREDGING : DREDGING OPERATIONS have been continued in tlie diversion cut throughout the month and steady progress has been maintained; iill items of plant operating in a satisfactory manner. Alinor delays have occurred owing to adverse weather experienced in that a percentage of fine sand passes through the hopper doors and has to be redredged.
Drilling and Blasting: The Spud pontoon has been occupied during the month with drilling and blasting off the Waikanae Beach. Operations during tlie first half of the month were intermittently hampered by rough seas which prevented work to practically a week in the aggregate.
Training and Diversion .Walls: Pile driving to training wall in the river, opposite the Board’s office has been carried on and reinforced concrete frames-and slabs have been carried in position as the work proceeded; the temporary timber staging lias been carried ahead well in advance of finished work. The removal of the spoil from behind the Reads Quay Wharf lias continued by contract and the old Bond Store has been removed to permit of the extension of the excavation over the site.
BREAKWATER CONSTRUCTION. Diversion Cut Breakwater: Approximately 190 feet lineal of mass concrete block breakwater has been constructed “in-situ” to date, and reinforced concrete caissons for the continuation of tliis breakwater are being constructed in the bloekyard. also concrete blocks for filling the caissons. The construction staging has been extended seaward and a commencement is being made placing the caissons in position. Caisson for Alain Breakwater Extension: The scow “Ngahau” together with divers has been engaged in placing 5 ton concrete blocks on the sea-bed at the end of the existing breakwater to form protecting apron to rubble mound for caisson, by means of one of the Board’s mud hopper .punts. Guide piles for use in placing caisson have been driven off the end of the break-water. S-ows “Ngahau” and “Zingara” The scow “Ngahau” has been principally engaged in preparation of the caisson base. The Zingara has been utilised for transportation of materials and supplies to the quarry as required. Blockvard: The plant has been engaged in the construction, of caissons and blocks for breakwater construction. The “Goliath” crane track has been extended beyond the face of the wharf to enable blocks to he placed on floating plant. Reinforced Concrete Wharf (Cook Quay): Additional pre-cast “A” frames have been made in the construction yard.
