MERRYAI AKERS EX.JOY THEMSELVES Jdeal weather, favorable tides, and a. public holiday, helped to popularise Waikanae Beach on Saturday. Throughout both the day and the .evening the beach was thronged with pleasure seekers and it is little wonder in such circumstances, that the •and Gala organised by Mr E. IE Wane-hop lor the benefit ol the Moll ae Bath Funds proved an overwhelming success with a record attendance. 'Undoubtedly, the- water proved a verv great attraction during the day especially in the afternoon, alien the beach was crowded with bathers seeking in the sea respite from the heat In the evening, ihe programme ar ai.ged by the carnival cemmitt < proved most effective and it was then also that the popularity of the bench was fully indicated. Parked cars lined each’ side of Grey street for a distance of several hundred voids and the promenade was crowded v> vth merry-makers, while on the outskirts of the lights parties eou-Vl he seen in all directions.
Both in the afternoon and evening the programme arranged by the carnival committee wae a most, diversified one. Children were specially catered for in the afternoon with games races and sand-Unilding competitions. That, merry troupe already wellknown to the Gisborne public a.s the “Breezy Busters” presented a programme of most popular items and features of the entertainment wore several vocal numbers by Mr Clive HincUe, Christchurch’s leading amateur baritone. As in most functions which aim at promoting an object for the good of the town, the City Band was in evidence and, in the evening, presented an open air concert which, by the excellence of the programme, proved one of the most popular ever presented by the Band. Orchestral items were contributed both in the- afternoon and evening by Aforrow’s ;jozz hand and dancing in the open -air under the- glare ol the electric . light- proved a profitable source of revenue to the bath funds Stalls of various descriptions conducted Uy the- committees running the campaigns of the queen aspirants registered good business during the festivities. The public should notice that the ...mi session of the “Queen- Carnival” Campaign is scheduled to commence next Saturdav at the Garrison Hall.
