GIRLS TRAPPED IN OIL BLAZE
WOMAN COLLAPSES INTO FLAMES. One woman, Mrs. Hose Pyrah, of 3, Lothair-streetr, Chorlton-on-Med-lock, was burned to death and a number of girls and one youth were injured in a fire at Piymouth-avcnue, Longsight, Manchester. Eight girls are detained in the infirmary suffering from severe burns. The yard was occupied by Messrs. Charles Alack and Co., oil and grease manufacturers, and the floor above the yard by Messrs. Philips, Schulman" and Co., lamp-shade manufacturers. The only means of exit from Messrs. Schulman’s rooms was by a wooden staircase leading into..the oil yard. Fifteen women and girls were in the workroom when the fire broke out. One of them, Miss Rene AVoodhouse, smashed a window, and several girls jumped on to a corrugated iron roof, but the roof gave way and thev fell into the blazing oil yard. A ladder was placed against a window near which a number of girls were standing .screaming. Five of them got down safely, but then the ladder caught fire. Airs. Pyrah appeared at the window, .’saw the blazing ladder and hesitated. She was urged to get on the ladder, but she fell back exhausted into the burning room. •
