TAKAPUNA RACES. TRANSFORMER WINS THE CUP. AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting opened to-day. The weather was fine for the most part of the day, but light showers (this being the first rain for over- three weeks) fell after the fourth race. There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £58,213, compared with £62,727, on the corresponding day of last year. Following are the results: — Tidal Stakes. —1 King Emerald (T. Green) 1, 4 Bold Front 2, 3 Cantab 3. Also ran: 8 Abbey Day, 12 Ambrosia, 17 Acushla, 9 Bright Comet, 5 Daytaro, 14 Fair Abbey, 6 King Arch, 16 Sir Gilbert, 10 Mavette, 18 Atotoa, 15 Queen Rewa, 11 Salamander, 13 Star Comet, 2 Town Guard, 7 Wyoming. King Emerald was the popular pick for the Trial Stakes, with which the programme opened, carrying about £IBO more than Town Guard, while Cantab also had friends. The public nearly selected them rightly, for King Emerald won and Cantab was third. King Arch and King Emerald were the early leaders, but Cantab supplanted King Emerald before they crossed the top. However, King Emerald was never far away and, taking charge in the straight, beat Bold Front by a length and aquartcr. At the finish Cantab was only half a length away third, with Abbey Day, 'Wyoming, Town Guard, Daytaro and Bright Comet next. Town Guard was one of the last when the field had gone a hundred yards, but he, later, commenced to move up and was close to the leaders at the entrance to tlio straight. The race should improve him. Bold Front was about the middle of the field for the greater portion of the distance, but finished well in second place. Glencairn, Peter Rosa, Hangawera and Waiau Lad were the defections from the Orewa High Weight Handicap'. Ilangitahi was entrusted with about £620 more than Royal Form, while Ngarara was next best backed. Praiseworthy started off at a great .pace and going along the straight the first time was well clean of Kamchameha, Ngarara, Dead Sweet and Royal Form, who were racing in that order. Along the back the field commenced to close up, but Kamehamelia got knocked back. Dead Sweet ancl Praiseworthy led across the top from Kamehameha and Ngarara, but Dead Sweet. and Praiseworthy then retired. _ Kamehameha and Ngarara came into the straight together, attended by Royal Form. The last-named then took charge and Avon comfortably by a neck from Kamehameha, who beat Rangitahi by two lengths. Ngarara, Day Bell, Dead Sweet, Gienotus and Sea Comet were next. The favorite should be seen to better advantage before long. Nineteen paraded for the Zcalandia Handicap. Seat was a £5 better favorite than Archeno, while Tea Bell and Quincoma were next fancied. Flying Juliet, from the extreme outside, soon rushed to the front and stayed there along the back. She was attended by Tea Bell, Muscari, Charlady, Areheen and Qif\coma. The order was much the same crossing the top. Flying Juliet was first to turn for home from Tea Bell, Muscat, Quincoma, Charlady and Merry Damon. In a good finish, Flying Juliet beat Tea Bell by a head, wiD Merry Damon three lengths away third. •Charlady, Muscari, Aimnnavis. Bahama and Archeiio "were next. half a length, while Town Bank, was a couple of lengths away, followed by Eden Hall, Desert Glow, Papatu, Hipo, Barometer and Golden Krist, ii'ith Royal Present last. Toivn Bank got interfered with when going along the straight the first time.

Town Guard, who ivas making his second appearance to-day, was made favorite for the Ferry Handicap, carrying about £2BO more than Awarere, while Mucßoan, Bczarro, Marble Mount and War Officer were next. Maclloon ran up to Aiyaxere half a mile from home, with Judge’s Box, Alonso, War Officer and Town Guard racing as named. There ivas little alteration when the field turned for home and Aivarere stayed on long enough to get the decisjpn by a neck from Maqiloon, which beat War Officer by two lengths. Alonsoa, Marble Mount, Toivn Guard, Maveelish and Lady Cintra were next. The two-year-old event, the Calliope Handicap, saw nine go to the pust. lne public made Paganelli twice as goou a favorite as Exalted, whilst in the Shade ivas. next favored. Hangawera led past the stand from Antrim Boy, Ngarara, Arch Queen and Weuday. Antrim Bov rail to the front going along the back, but, a little later, Wenday headed him, the pair being attended by Clockwork and Hangawera. Wenday ivas first to turn for home fiq.n Hangawera, Kamehameha and Te Koroke. .In another fine finish, iiangawera got the verdict by a head. Te Koroke was two and a-bilf lcngihs away, followed by Kamehameha, Arch Queen, Ngarara and Clockwork. Caivnpore, Areheen and Aurumavis were the scratchings ior the Stewards’ Handicap, ivith which tiie programme concluded. Tea Bell £1549, King Merv £IOOS, and Pelham £959 were most fancied. King Merv Dan Quinn ivere the. early leaders, but Chairman then took charge from Oration, King Mery, Dan Quin, Ned Kelly and Tea Bell2 Across the top, Oration iveiit to the front, with Dan Quin, Ned Kelly, Chairman and King Merv. Ned Kelly ivas the first to turn for home from Oration, Dan Quin, Serang and Tea Bell. Tea Bell then drew out to win by half a length from Ned Kelly, who heat Sorarig by tivo lengths. Chairman ivas fourth, followed by Dan Quin, Pelham, York Abbey and Oration.
