TE KARAKA SPORTS

A. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Te Karalia was en fete last Saturday when the Te Karalia Sports Club held their annual meeting. Considering the counter-attractions in the district there was a good attendance of tlie public and the various events were viewed with the keenest attention. Entries for both athletic and horse events were strong and resulted in keen competition. It may. have been the grounds, and certainly in the distance events the shortness of the track kept cyclists continually on -the turn, but the handicapping in every case did not appear to allow the close finishes which local track enthusiasts have learned to expect as the result of recent meetings. Over the short distances, however, the field drew together at the tape with only inches between most of the competitors. Big entries were attracted in horse events with most of Poverty Bay’s leading competitors riding. This section proved one of the features of the gathering. The day was free from accidents and except for the cycle races no falls were registered. In two cycling events Buckingham fell, bringing down in each case other riders. Everything possible was done by the committee to cater for the entertainment of the public and orchestral items were given throughout the day by Mrs. Henley’s orchestrfi. Refreshment .booths were conducted by the Te Karalia hockey girls. Much credit is due to the officials for the expeditious manner in which the programme was carried out and members of 'the G.A.A. and H.C., who rendered assistance, were untiring in their efforts to ensure the, success of the meeting. The official handicapper (Mr. A. C. Swan), especially in the multiple capacity of handicapper, judge, and timekeeper, was well to the fore. The officials were —Horse events: Judge, Mr. A. Pdmer; starter, Mr. T. Sherratt; athletic events —Judges, Messrs. W. McGrannachan, B. Thompson, W. Hankey and H. G. Price; track steward, Mr. A. G. Lucas; starter,> Mr. L. Houlahan; marksman, Mr. A. Rice • timekeepers, Messrs. J. Harvey, A. C. Swan; referee, Mr. M. Dovle. Joint-Secretaries, Messrs. H. M. Hnrkcr and W. Nisbett.
