ANNIVERSARY DAY

ATTRACTIONS IN GISBORNE. To-day Gisborne, in common with the rest of the Auckland province, celebrates the anniversary of the distuct. Practically all business houses will be closed and residents will be on holiday. I ndoubtedly one of the greatest attractions will be the Poverty Bay Trotting Club’s summer meeting at the Park Racecourse, at which a large number of visiting horses are competing. Lovers of athletics and those who desire to spend a day in the country will also be catered for in two of the most popular sports fixtures of the year—Te Karaka and Waerenga-o-kuri.

Te Karaka offers one of the best athletic fixtures of the year, every class of sport being provided for. Amateurs have come forward freely and the handicaps indicate that all events should provide exciting finishes. Horsemen are also catered for and the good prize money offered will undoubtedly attract large fields. •Special train services are being run and a large attendance of townspeople is expected. Air. Alossman’s beautiful grounds at Y\ aereuga-o-kuri also offer a delightful spot for all town dwellers seeking a day’s holiday in the country for, apart from viewing an excellent country sports programme, the shady grounds offer splendid picnic facilities. A climax to the Waeren-ga-o-kuri gathering will he a dance to be held in Air. Gillingham’s woolshed.

Waikanae Beach should prove a very attractive rendezvous when a gala will be held tin’s afternoon and this evening in aid of funds for the Mac-Rae bath. “The Breezy Buskers.” a clever amateur combination, will give continuous Shows, and stalls and side-shows should lie liberally patronised. The City Band will play in the evening.
