Mr. J. Rcicl arrived in Gisborne last evening to make arrangements for a two nights season next week or tlic St. Leon’s Circus. A Vancouver message states that the Maoris arrived on Thursday and had an enthusiastic welcome. They -v. engage in the first of three games on * y Saturday.—A. and N.Z.C.A. Miss Z ill ah Bateman, the _ wellknown English actress, will arrive by the Wainui this morning, and, at the Gisborne Hotel at 10 o’clock, will he accorded a welcome to Gisborne, by the Mayor and Mayoress. Dr. Eric Caro, of Napier, is visiting Gisborne for a few days, accompanied by Messrs. S. F. Anderson (Arapawainui), E. Howell and others. They will remain for the week-end, and Dr. Caro wil ldeliver an illustrated lecture to-night in the new Adventist Church.
S r Henry Brett was taken seriously ill at Rotorua on Thursday, and was removed to George V. Hospital, where he was operated upon lor abdominal trouble yesterday morning. The patient is conscious and spent a fair night. The operation was completely 0 successful, but age and strength are determining factors m the light for life. At 7.80 last evening Sir Henry Brett was holding his own as well as .could be expected.— P.A.
