MONTHLY MlilsriNU. At the last meeting of the \\ aiapu County uouncil there were present: U\s. A. K. ivirk (chairman), M. Hyland, C. T. Williams, F. J. iMHiams, H. Tl. Fairlie, and Vm. Gates. Permission was granted to the Vacuum Oil Co. to erect a kerbside petrol pump at the premises oi Messrs Bignali and Holmes, Tokomaru Bay. The Duuson coal mine disaster committee wrote asking tor a subscription towards the relief of the miners' families.—A donation of £lO was made.

The medical officer of health wrote in reference to the heavy expenditure entailed in publishing by-laws, and stated that.it was not necessary to publish them in lull as long as the object was clearly set forth. Mr Sydney Haig requested that the road leading to his place, Maraehara Rangitukia, be formed.—The engineer was instructed to inspect and report on the probable cost of the work, with a view to getting a grant for the road on next year’s estimates. An auctioneer’s license was granted to Air J. G. Buchanan. In regard to heavy traffic license fees, the town clerk at Gisborne advised that the Cook County Council had agreed to allocate the fees on a mileage basis. —it was decided to ascertain the views of the other local bodies on the question. On the motion of Cr. F. J. Williams, it was decided that the Cook County Council be asked to remit the Waiapu Council’s portion of the heavv traffic fees on the basis of the agreement to apportion the ices on the capital value and cost of maintenance. . The Post Office secretary, ill greply to a communication from the council in reference to the indiscriminate cutting down of trees when clearing teicgraph lines, advised that the mattei would receive attention. On the motion of Cr Oates, it was decided that the Commissioner oi Crown Lands be asked that the £391) set aside for roading in the Mamitalii block be expended on the Ruatoria drain, and advised that the council was prepared to supervise the work. It was decided that the matter of widening the main road at Tokomaru Bay near Bignall’s corner he deferred until the next year’s estimates. "j"t was resolved to ask the Ministei of Public Works for assistance in connection with a flood damage grant for work to protect the Tupuaeroa road. Tenders are to lie called for the work in connection with the .Mangahnuini stream groynes. Cr F. J. AY 7 ill in ms stated that a large quantity of water ran down the Anaura road between the old roadman’s wliare and the bridge, and an embankment, was required to divert the river.—The engineer was directed to investigate the matter. Cr. 0. T. AVilliams brought up the question of the use of chains on metalled roads, and stated that he had met a lorry with chains on, but unfortunately had not taken the number.—After a short discussion it was resolved that all roadmen he directed to report on motorists and lorry drivers using chains While running on metalled roads. The chairman said that inquiries had been made a.s to the progress ot the metalling of the AVhakaangiangi road.—The engineer stated that this work was held up as it was moie ct less tied up with the work of metalling the main road, and it would he more economical to do both jobs at the same time.—lt was decided to call for tenders for the Whakaangiangi work. 1 , Cr. Fairlie stated that he had convened a meeting of ratepayers of the Tokomaru riding to hear any objections to the taking and closing portions of the road in the Mangahaumi block No. 7. No ratepayers attended, and it was therefore inferred that their; were lib objections.—lt was_ decided to take and close the portions referred to. ' It was agreed that tlic council should acquire for the purpose of a stock middock four acres of land on the east side of the Mangakino creek between the AA’ainnu river and the j-oad from the Rotokautuku bridge to Ruatoria. It was decided that the engineer inspect and arrange for a culvert on the Te Horo-Tikapa road. Accounts amounting to 44/8/ Jos Gd were passed for payment.
