Cycling is a national pastime in Italy, as borne out by the fact that at a recent big. road race held there Mussolini, Italy’s great stateman. gave a prize of twenty thousand lires to the three placed men, and to any Italian winning a world’s championship <fce offered a Knighthood. Ihe amateur world’s sprint championship was'won by an Italian, while a French team carried off the world’s amateur road championship. The nearest Englishman was eighth. Ihe English competitor broke away 1 from the field and led by half a mile at one part, along with another French competitor, but' owing to being practically by himself he refeeived no pacing and; was eventually caught bv Jbc field doing extremely well m the sorint for the line to get into eighth place.
