MISHAP TO NORTHUMBERLAND.
(To The Editor.) Sir, —With reference to your statement regarding the mishap to the Northumberland, I feel it. my duty as one of the senior apprentices to point out a considerable error which reflects on the courage of our deck crew. You say, “that many of the lads immediately sought safety in life belts and'even when • the vessel was at anchor some of the lads were to be seen wandering around muffled with life preservers.” This is absolutely wrong. An order was sent down to me from the. chief officer to see that all hands were to put on their life belts. This they did. When the vessel came to anchor many o) them took them off, and once more a message came down saving that anybody found not wearing a life-belt would have his leave stopped. \V« should be much obliged if you would correct this error as soon as possible I npi. Yours etc., * W. WATSON R M S. Northumberland, Jan. 26, 1927.
