AMATEUR ATHLETICS GISBORNE CLUB'S EVENING meeting A good evening programme was held by the G.A.A. and H.C. on the Reserve last night, of six races, the ladies’ event being run off_ in two heats and final. The results were as follows: Ladies’ 100 metres handicap, first heat: Miss N. "Wilson 2)yds, 1; Miss 11. McCarthy 8-jyds.. 2; Miss M. McDonald 84yds 3. Time, 121-5.. This heat was ran in very good time, Miss Wilson ran in her usual determined manner, winning by inches from Miss McCarthy. Second heat: Miss -N. jansson 16yds', 1; Miss E. Denton 9yds, 2; Miss J. Haisman 104yds. 3. Time, 12 2-5. Miss Janssen led all the way and won by two feet. Final: Miss Ri. McCarthy 1, Miss N. Wilson 2, Miss- M. McDonald 3. Time, 12.3-5. From a good start the six finalists soon got moving. Miss Jansson was caught by Miss McDonald at about the sixty yard mark. From here on a good finish was witnessed Miss McCarthy going to the front a few yards from the worsted to win by a foot from Miss Wilson, the remainder inches away. 80 yards scratch invitation race.—0. F' Paltridge 1, F. Truman 2, T. Corkery 3. Time, 8 1-5. The winner had things all his own way hitting the front at the start and won by two yards. A good fight took place, for second position, F. Truman throwing himself at he worsted just beating T. Corkery hjy inches, who inches ahead of H. Martin. l-i miles cycle. handicap.- -C. McCoy 195yds, i- J. Douglas wr., 2. McCoy made good use of his handicap, and kept the pace on for the first two laps, at the end of which J. Douglas had caught up to G. Goldsmith, and these two rode the next three laps together, gradually reducing the gap- between them and the leader. At the bell McCoy still had a lead of more than 100 yards and passed the post a winner by fifteen yards. One mile handicap.—V. Blackburn 95yds, 1; E. Glanville 35yds 2; G. Ingram 125yds, 3. Time, 4.4221-5. E. Glanville -gradually worked his way through the field, and at the hell was lending. A good fight for positions took place up the hack stretch, V. Blackburn proving too fast for Glanville and left him behind a hundred yards from the tape, goingon to win by. five yard’s, G. Ingram being two yards hack third. WATERSIDER SPORTS B. LE COMPE WINS DOUBLE At the Watersiders’ Picnic yesterday held on the Pa tut ah i Domain, great interest was taken in the two professional cycle races, one mile and two miles. There were seven riders in each event and good races were witnessed. B. Le Conipe, of Christchurch, won both races. The finishes were very close, only inches separating the first three riders, reflecting, credit on the. handicappcr, Mr C. L. Davy.; ?
