SHEFFIELD SHIELD N.S.W. v. VICTORIA KIPP AX MAKES FINE SCORE (Received Jan. 26. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 26. The match between New South Wales and Victoria for the Sheffield Shield commenced at the Cricket Ground to-day in glorious weather. At the drawing of stumps New South Wales had made 424 for the loss of eight wickets—Morgan 29, Macartney 41, Kippax (in) 187, Taylor 29. Jackson 42, Oldfield 06.) New South Wales won the toss and elected to bat, but the start was not promising, three wickets being down for 91. Then Kippax and Taylor carried the score to 155, when the latter was dismissed. Jackosn joined Kippax and- the pair added 94 for the fifth wicket. Kippax was in great orm and scored freely all round the wicker, treaiiug the howlers impartially. Oldfield opened his shoulders and made some beautifully timed shots. His partnership with Kippax yielded 111 in sixty-two minutes. Blaekie was Victoria’s most successful bowler.—U.P.A.
PONSFORD’S NEW POSITION. APPOINTMENT ON MELBOURNE HERALD.. (Received Jan. 26. 11.50 p.m.) MELBOURNE, J an. 26. Ponsford has accepted a position as a member of the commercial staff' and cricket writer on the Melbourne Herald, and has refused the offer to return to England to play for Lancashire.—U.P.A.
