WORK IN THE COOK COUNTY. ENGINEER’S REPORT TO COUNCIL. ':.i the Gisborne Opotiki road, via ■Coast main road tlie usual maintenance was applied to the section from the borough boundary to Wliangara. The maintenance work .performed on the Gisborne Opotiki via Motu highway was of a- light nature the loose gravel being graded in from the sides with the tractor grader and a few loads of gravel were spread where required. Light gravel repairs were effected to a short section south of Manutuke. The construction work carried out on'the main south road comprised the laying of the top course of metal and penetration with bitumen which has been continued since the new year. This work has been completed to Patutahi junction. Scarifying and laying of foundation course has been carried out between the junction and Robert’s road Manutuke. Sides of the read have been built where necessary, and a large supply of metal has been carted to depots on this section. With the improvement in the weather much better progress will now be made.
On the Gisborne —Wairoa via Hangaroa road only light maintenance was carried out on this road, the surface throughout being in fair condition. The work of widening the Bluff Section south of McLaurm’s, under co-operative contracts, is nearing completion, and laying of bottom course of metal of this section is in hand. One of the Council’s lorries has been engaged on tins work. A second lorry is going out to-day. Two horse teams have also been cn-o-aged to cart from the river-bed near Gray’s. The bottom course will he completed to Gray’s before the laying of top course is commenced. One m the Council’s rollers is on the ]ob. On tlie. section south of Tiniroto formation work is being carried out on a bad cutting near the-roadman’s whare. Laying of bottom course oi metal is in progress on the recently formed section. Arrangements have been made to take a supply of crushed metal for the top course from a contractor at Te Keinga.
