As a sequel to a police, raid on Saturday ■ Frances Dansey Orr was fined £75 for keeping a common gam-ing-house in Swanson Street, and Philip George Mulligan was fined £25 for assisting in the management. It was stated that both men had been carrying oh a bookmaking business since December.. —P.A.
ASSAULT ON A PRIEST LABORER! FINED £3 CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 24. Alick Handford, laborer, employed at the Roman Catholic Presbytery, Rangiora, went on .a* drinking bout while the priests were away. The Rev. Father O’Doherty returned yesterday afternoon and told Handford that he would have to leave. Handford struck the priest on the face with his fist, knocking him down. Handford was fined £3 for assault at the Rangiora. Police Court to-day, and was convicted and discharged on a. charge of drunkenness. MOTORISTS* IN TROUBLE. DRUNKEN DRIVER’S LICENSE IMMEDIATELY CANCELLED. STRATFORD, Jan. 24. At the Magistrate’s Court Mr Tate, S.M., dealt with a lengthy list of speeding and breaches of the r. otor by-laws, including several eases ot crossing railway intersections whilst a train was approaching. He said the more he heard of these cases -the more confirmed his opinion that the majority of the defendants were altogether unfitted tq drive motor vehicles. The only method of rjj-otoct-ing the public was by the cancellation of licenses. John Luke (Flintolf, farmer, Inglewood, was charged with being drunk in charge of a car and with a breach of a prohibition order. Defendant admitted having two “spots” in Eltliam, and on the way home he crashed into the back of a car standing off the road at Midhirst, and collided with another at Tarikj. The evidence showed that he wished to fight the first owner. His wife had proceeded home in another car after the first collision, refusing to travel with him. Defendant’s license was immediately cancelled, and he was disqualified from driving for twelve months. No line was inflicted.—P.A.
THEFT OF LODGE MONEYS. ARRESTED ON EVE OF DEPARTURE V RUM N.Z. AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. The theft of lodge money totalling £3O 19s 9d was admitted by Ernest Wright,' a young man in the Police Court, Wright was secretary to the Richmond Lodge”442B New Zealand, No. 13, Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, said Senior. Detective Hammond. The remuneration lie received for his work was only nominal, about £3 a quarter. Originally he was a ship’s steward by occupation, and had been in New Zealand only twelve months. Alter misappropriating portion of the money entrusted to him, Wright went to Wellington, where he shipped for England, lie* was arrested the dav before the boat sailed. “Stand him down.” said Mr Hunt, S.M., ‘I want to see the probation officer before passing sentence.” — P.A. DARING THEFTS FROM FOREIGNERS.. STOLE MONEY WHILE CHINESE ASLEEP IN ROOMS. AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. - Two charges of breaking, entering and theft were admitted by "William Gibson Young and Leonard David Williams, both young men, in the Police Court, to-day, and Young pleaded guilty to six further charges of a similar nature.. The dates, of the offences ranged from July, 1925, to January, 192-13.. ' Young, in a statement to the police, said he went to the fruit shop of Cheang Kee in Great North Road, and after climbing on to the roof ot a shod, was aoie to reach through and open a window and take a bag which contained £iH) in sovereigns and ban sovereigns wrapped in paper. Accused further stated that on the night of December ru, 1925, he went to a Chinese laundry in Jervois Road, entered via a window, and found two Chinese sleeping in an upstairs room. From their clothing hanging on a wail he. abstracted about £l3, and then took some money from a till downstairs. Bering October, '1925, continued accused, lie had taken about £l2 from a pair of trousers .hanging behind a door in a Chinaman’s house in Khybar Pass Road. There was a Chinaman asleep in the room at the time. NOT DRUNK BUT UNFIT TO DRIVE A CAR. MOTORIST FINED AND .LICENSE SUSPENDED. DUNEDIN, Jan. 24. Oswald Leonard Edie, Birchwood, Southland, was charged at the City Police Court before Mr Bundle. S-M-, with being intoxicated whilst in -charge of a motor car on January ,22nd. After the hearing. the Magistrate said he was satisfied after consideration of the -evidence and the actions of the accused, that lie was under the influence of liquor, and was not fit to drive a car. Accused was not drunk in the usual sense of the term, but he was not in ’ a normal state. ' He. would be fined £5 and ex‘penses 21s. and prohibited from driving until March 31st next.—P.A.
