AUCKLAND’S TRAMS

PENNY SECTION SYSTEM ADOPTED. EXPENSES TO BE RVIEWED. (Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 21. A review of the tramway fares and .sections and other questions of transport policy is to be made by the Tramways Committee of the City Council, following the adoption, by the Council last evening, of a motion moved by Cr. L. A. Eady. The motion suggested that the Tramways Committee should- give consideration to the following matters: In view of the number of car passengers per car mile being appreciable lower than in either Wellington or Dunedin, short trip travelling be encouraged by the adoption of a penny section fare: in consideration -of the average section lengths being considerably longer than those in ‘Wellington and Dunedin, ranging from 56 to 144 chains, that an 80 ■chain section be adopted as a basis for tlie proposed new penny section; the advisability of adopting a suitable transfer system be considered and all distance fares be reduced pro rata "to the distance travelled, but not to taper so sharply as the existing -.Tate; tlie percentage of operating expenses to revenue being the highest in New Zealand next to the Gisborne system, expenses be scrutinised with ,n view to the maximum reduction; the question of departmentalising the ‘omnibus business under a bus submanager be considered, with the idea ■of running semi independent services at certain times at. a higher fare on a “seat for every passenger’’ basis, such service to be used apart from feeders and for inter termini and across city facilities, the question of appointing a “revenue” officer be considered, such officer to be made responsible for the building up and increasing of traffic revenue by adopting different methods to popularise travelling during other than peakload periods. The motion was carried.
