BEEF SHOWS IMPROVEMENT

AUCKLAND, Nov. 5. At Westfield beef was in average numbers and competition keen. Values improved easily one shilling to two shillings per lbolb. Extra choice ex 355; choice and prime 29s to 3ls; ordinary plain 22s to 28s; prime young cow and heifer 26s to 30s; ordinary cow 20s to 255; rough beef 1 Is to 19s; extra heavy prime steers £4 10s to £5.17s Gd; heavy AT2 10s to £l4 ss; lighter £lO 10s to £l2 ss; light £8 Ids to £lO os; small ami unfinished £6 10s to £8 ss; extra heavy prime cows and heifers £9 os to £lO LOs; heavy £8 to £9 2s 6d; lighter £6 15s to £7 17s Gd; light £5 to £0 10s; others £3 to £4 13s; bulls £2 lbs to £6 10s.

Calves were an average yarding, prices again declining. Runners 84s to 119 s for extra choice; heavy venier.s 58s to 655; medium 40s to 455; light 20s to 365; smaller 10s to 10s, small and unfinished 3s to 8s; rough 16s to 235. Sheep wore an average yarding. There was steady competition at late quotations. Heavy prime wethers 36s to 37s 6d; medium 34s Gd to 365; light 32s to 345; small and unfinished 23s to 3ls 9d; heavy prime ewes 32s to 33s 3d; medium 2Ss to 31s Gd: light 25s to 27s 6d ; unfinished and inferior 20s to 245.

Spring iambs were forward in large numbers and values were slightly easier. Heavy prime 32s to 34s Gd; medium /.Ns to 31s 9d: light 23s to 28s; inferior 20s to 24s Gd.

Pigs were in large numbers and prices were easy. Choppers 76s to 90s ; heavy and medium baeoners 68s to 775; light baeoners and heavy porkers 58s to 665; medium and light porkers 50s to 565; stores sold at late rates. Large 23s to 365; slips 20s to 30s ; weanei'S 15s to 23s.—P.A.

FAT SHEEP IN SHORT SUPPLY,

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 5

To-day’s sale was a double one in consequence of no sale being • held next week (carnival week). The market drew smaller entries than anticipated and the sale was therefore a good one.

Store sheep.—There was a medium entry of forward, mostly shorn. Tht demand was keen for wethers, ailues showing a rise of Is to Is Gd on late rates. Owing to the short entry of fat sheep butchers competed for forward stove wethers. Store sheep, forward, sound mouth shorn wethers made 35s 9d; sound and failing-mouth shorn wethers 28s 2d ; small 2 and 4th shorn wethers 25s 3d ; shorn mther hoggets 24s 2d; ((-bred woolly wether hoggets 28s 4d filial fined woolly wether hoggets 40s 2d; halfbred woolly ewe hoggets 455; good aged halfbred ewes and lambs 275; aged crossbred ewes and lambs 24s Gd ; aged y-bred ewes and lambs 22s Id. In spring Jambs the entry was large for this time of the year, totalling 550 bead, compared with lpl last year. The entry was in excess of requirements and the result was that prices wore 2s to 3s less per head than last week.

Fat sheep.—Ten races were forward, compared with St last week. A few lines wore from the North Island. The quality was mixed and not suf-ficient-was forward to meet requirements. therefore a good sale resulted. Prices on the average were from 2s to 3s in advance of late rates. Extra prime woolly wethers made 68s 9d; prime 56s to 60s : medium 50s Gd to 55s ; light 44s to 49s 6d; shorn 39s to 4.35; light shorn 32s Gd to 38s 6d; extra prime woolly ewes 635; prime 50s to 565; medium 44s to 495; light 37s to 435; extra prime shorn 48s; prime shorn 39s to 465; medium shorn 30s to 38s. Fat cattle.—A total of 690 head were penned as against 490 lasl week. Included in the entry were 250 head from the North Island. The quality was good and prices on tlie whole were on a. par with those of last week, prices per 1001 b were: Extra prime medium weight beef tu50s "prime medium weight 44s to 475; prime heavy weight 4ls to 445; medium quality 38s to 403 6d; light 34s to 37s 6d, rough and inferior 32s 6d clown to 22s 6cl. Show bullocks made up to £26 10s; extra prime medium weight £lB 10s to £2O 15s; medium £lO to £18; light £l2 to £ls 10s; £9 to £11; extra prime heifers £l7 12s 6d ; privno £l3 to £ls ; medium £9 10s to £l2 10s; light £5 to £9; extra prime cows £ls 7s 6d; prime £l2 to £l4; ordinary £8 to £ll 10s; old £4 10s to £7 15s.

Vealers.—Good vealers sold well at an advance on late rates. Runners made £7 15s ; good vealers £5 os to £6 los; good calves £3 5s to Lo; small calves 15s to 455. Stove cattle.—A small entry came forward and a fairly good demand was experienced at late rates. Good cows made £2 7 (Js to £3 3s; medium £1 15s to £2 5s ; old 15s to 30s.

Dairy cattle.—There was on entry of 74 head, compared with 104 last week. Best second and third year calvers close to calving made £6 to £8 10s; medium sorts £3 to £5 10s; best heifers springing £7 to £10; medium £4 to £0; backward calvers and cows in milk £1 10s to £2 10s. Fat pigs.—Choppers made £2 10s to £7; light baeoners £3 15s to £4 10s; heavy £4 15s to £s—average price per lb 7d to 7|d; light porkers £2 7s to £2 15s ; heavy £3 to £3 12s — average price per lb 7ifd to Bjd. Store pigs.—A large, entry sold well at late rates. Small- weaners made 2-Os to 28s; good 28s to 335; small stores 35s to 40s; medium 42s to 495; large 56s.—P.A.
