WORLD SHIPPING CONTINUANCE OF DEPRESSION IN INDUSTRY.

LONDON, Nov. 4. A report in Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for the year ended June 30 last records a continuance of depression in file shipbuilding idustry. Jt says: The tonnage of new vessels classed by Lloyds during the jectr, namely eight hundred and eightyfive thousand, was the lowest recorded for fifteen years, except the second year of the war, representing only 27 per cent, of that of 1920-21 and 55 per cent, of the total of 1922-23. Four hundred and fifty-four vessels with a tonnage of six hundred thousand, were lost, and five hundred vessels, with a tonnage of 1,250,000 dismantled or broken up, the last figure being twice that of the year ended June, 1923.

Although the world’s mercantile fleet is still fifteen million tons greater th.au in 1914, a large proportion is laid up, and the tonnage is unlikely ever to he able to successfully seek employment. Any serious revival of overseas traffic vilKbut further eliminate uneconomical tonnage. —Reuter.
