MAN FATALLY INJURED
INQUEST OPENED
Falling from his horse at Patutahi on Tuesday, a man named San dan. Steinberg, a Hussion by birth, and a returned soldier received severe in- 1 juries to which he succumbed almost immediately. It is understood that deceased was a station hand, working on various farms in the locality. He has no relatives in the Dominion, with the possible exception of a cousin, j The circumstances of Steinberg’s death were investigated by Mr. J. Ede, J.P., and a jury consisting of . Messrs. J. East, S. Lyons, 31. Brysonand T. Lynch, at Patutahi yesterday. ' Constable McLean conducted the in-. q.uiry for the police. _ , j Evidence was given by iehard .John ! Scragg to the effect that he saw Steinberg ride along the road past him, and after going a short distance the horse started to gallop. After covering a distance, of about 30 yards at a gallop Steinberg appeared to lose, control of bis mount, overbalanced, and fell on his head. Witness rushed up to the prostrate man, who was lying only about 1-50 yards away, but when! he got there- Steinberg was dead. ' i Airs. Gedyc stated that she was talking to Steinberg about 15 minutes before the accident occurred. At the time, she noticed the restivencss of the horse and remarked ' to Steinberg about it. Steinberg seemed quite capable of handling the horse. Albert Hall, barman, of the Patutahi Hotel, stated that while Steinberg was in the bar lie had four or five medium beers and then left the hotel. i
John Hall, proprietor of the hotel, 1 said that Steinberg was in the bar and after having a few drinks he left. , His horse seemed very restive when he rode away. He did not think that Steinberg was-by any means under , the influence of drink. ; i This concluded the evidence for the day, the inquest being adjourned until torday, when Dr. Kahieiiherg will be- called l and also further evidence concerning the horse. It- is under- ' -stood that the animal recently had been frightened In* a traction engine ' aiid was inclined to be fractious.
