(Received Nov. 4, 5.40 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 4. The early hours of Cup Day were filled with sensations.
During the rush of Cup traffic to Flemington the cal riage of a passenger train from North Melbourne burst into flames. The train was crowded arid the passengers tumbled cut in panic. The flames were quickly subdued. but all traffic was suspended and many finished the journey into, town afoot. Others attempted to get there in electric trams but struck trouble, as many of these were out of action. Trouble commenced at nine o clock at the Spencer Street station, where aiv empty race train, “The Pantagrr.pli.” became entangled in the overhead wires and brought them down .in a tangled mass. The current was then switched off, throwing the whole of the northern' system out of action. It was half an lictlr before the service was restored. Meantime enormous crowds assembled outside the Soencer Street station, bewailing their inability to reach the races. Motor end other vehicles did a roaring trade while the block lasted. A still more sensational ineider.'t occurred on the Jolimont electric tram, hi which Soearfelt, the Cup favorite, and Lilypoud, third favorite, and other horses were being transferred to Floraington. For some unexplained reason the train tore down the o\ erhead wires. A live wire fell across the train, which was set afire. The current was instantly out ofF, and the fire extinguished, and horses extricated and sent forward to their destination.—U.P.A.

Spearfclt and ot.her horses were onlv in a train that was also held up hv the general dislocation.-* U.P. A.'
