HOW IT IS DONE

ADVANCES IN SURGERY. AUSTRALIAN VANS FAME. NEW YORK, Oct. SI. To I)r H. ]5. Devine, oi .Melbourne, medical experts assomb.ed lie re gave credit- for an important achievement in medical science. It is a new operation which they believe will revolutionise gastric surgery, entirely changing the treatment ior ulcerous and nervous indigestion, one oi the most troublesome and widespread of modern diseases.

Before 2500 leading medical men at the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons, Dr Devine made pub ic for the drst time in America the details of the new operation, which is safe and simple as contrasted with the, old treatment. Tn the past the operation for ulcers arising from nervous indigestion was to cut away part ot the stomach —a dangerous and difficult procedure. In the light of recent discoveries by Br Royle and Professor .1. Hunter, both of “Australia-, Dr Devine found that the sympathetic nervous system plays an important part in the functioning of the stomach. The speed of modern living through these nerves causes the stomach _to become cramped, ceasing to function properly. Dr Devine discovered that this trouble could be eliminated liv completely neutralising the sympathetic nervous controlling area. With the stomach hack to normal the trouble disappears. A feature oi the treatment is that it is within reach of the poor.
