TUKIA IN DEMAND FOR STEWAR DS’ HAXDICAP. BOX SEAT DIES SUDDENLY. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 3.

There was no work of importance at Riccarton this morning, but, if the weather holds fine, to-morrow’s work should he particularly interesting as tlic outside of the course proper wii.l be open. It is reported that H- Gray, ir.cy hovo the mount on Tarleton, in the New Zealand Cup in which case lie would have to carry a few pounds overweight. According to present indications, Tukia: is likely to start -favorite for the Stewards’ Handicap.

The final payments to-night reduced the New Zealand Cup field to sixteen, those withdrawn being Quest, Count Cavpur. Baadicea, Stork, Kalakaua, •and Dominant. The most notable withdrawal is, therefore. Count Cavour, but it is l not surprising in view of his engagement in the Derby on Monday. Of those engaged in the Chip only D'euoalion, Ivukumc, and Dame Straitlace figured in that race last year. Seventeen arc left in the Stewards’ Handicap, including Mireusonta and Murihaupo. who finished second and third respectively in last year’s race. Acron and Sheik arc popular fancies for the Trotting Cup. The latter is one of the fittest horses trained at Addington. Taraife seems to have gone slightly out of favor, while his stable mate, Great Hope, who won the race last year, is coming into demand. Box Seat, who was engaged in the Trotting 'Cup, -died suddenly to-day from l , internal trouble. He was bought in Australia some two years ago for the Christchurch sportsmen. Messrs. Clarkson and Graham, but since he camie to New Zealand was always move or less unsound and his racing " efforts were unsuccessful, though, occasionally, lie showed a glimpse of form that ih'dicatcd' liini to be a/very speedy pacer.—Special.

THE DERBY RACE. WON WITH "GREAT EASE. SYDNTY; Nov. 3. Commenting on tho result of the Victorian Derby, the Herald says. Numerically the field was up to the average, hut it cannot be said the classic event had attracted three-year-olds with staying powers. It is doubtful, jif ever the Derby was won with greater ease. It appeared nothing more than an exercise ga 1 ’op to Spearfelt, who made a magnificent run over the two last furlongs

and came home on his own with the rider holding him well in hand. It was evident lie could have .won by several more lengths than he did.

Regarding Gloaming’s win, the Herald says it was one of the easiest wins he had for some time.

The Telegraph observes: Having Ids first race in bis native State, Gloaming made the opposition look cheap.—U.P.A. CRICKET.
