AUCKLAND, Nov. I’. Tlie first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting was held in good l weather. The going was rather dead as a result of recent rain. There was a large attendance, including the Covernor-Geiieral and Lady Jellicoe. The totalisator handled £61,760, compared with £73,293 for the similar day of last year. BAROMETER'S BAD LUCK. COLLISION WITH SPECTATOR ON COURSE. AUCKLAND, Nov. 2. Barometer’. 0 , connections in tlic Mitchelson Cup had hard luck, as the horse collided with a spectator when in a leading, position. The spectator, H. Diver, of Onelmnga, was under the impression that the horses had already passed and walked on to the course, resulting in the collision, which put Barometer out of the race, while Diver is in' hospital with somewhat painful injuries.—-P.A. TYTild Hind, who went, well in the going, assisted by Gamcbaay galloped four furlongs in sosec. both finishin'g well. , Sunart and, Tiarkton pimped away from the seven furlong disc, but the
latter could not handle the going and over .the concluding stages Sunarfc beat him by fully three lengths in lmin 34sec. Sunart went very well. Palestrina and Tresliam, breaking away from the seven furlongs peg, were on terms all the way and crossed the line together in lmin 33sec. Tins was tho best seven furlongs of the morning and both ran well. Retrospect- covered the distance in linin 34»e0 and Beacon Light covered half a, mile in 54 3-ssee. Dazzling Light covered five furlongs r,Seely in lmm 7 2-ssec. Rich Prize and Fires tick slipped over four furlongs along tho back in 51 2-osee. This was the best sprint of the morning. Bonita, with a featherweight up, covered six furlongs in lmm 20 3-sscc ■ — la good showing. _ * , Mireusonta revelled in the . going and covered five, furlongs easily in lmin Bsee, going well. Currency sprinted three furlongs in 38 2-s.sec .along the back. Deucalion, assisted over the last six furlongs by Fresco, galloped a mile in lmin 49see. Ohic-.kwheat, with as a mate, covered l lialf a mile in 55scc. Inferno finished slightly in front of Bonhommc at the close of six furlongs, run in lmin 24 3-ssec. Gold Light, jumping away from the nine furlongs peg, covered the distance in 2min 4 l-sscc, finishing well.
Hungry Hill and Escarpment were together at the close ol six furlongs, run irJ lmin 23 2-ssce. iKukume boat Lucinette by fully two lengths at tl/o conclusion of a mile and a-quartcr, the last mile taking lmin 51-sec. Rag Fair and Deep Drive galloped six furlongs in lmin 255-er-.-Lavia, handling the going better than Giant-killer, beat him over five furlongs run in lmin lOsee, though both, could have improved, on the time. Tukia was . not asked for her best while sprinting five furlongs in lmin Bsec.
Murihnupo covered the same distance in lmin 8 4-ssec. Light-up and Purple Iris galloped l six furlongs in lmin 24sec, finishing on terms.
Orange Blossom covered five furlongs in Inuii 9 4-ssec, finishing on well.
Footfall was going evenly throughout a mile done in lmin 51 l-ssce.
Red Ivriss, with more weight up, covered the same journey in lmin 51 sec.
Enthusiasm went very _ evenly throughout her gallop of a mile, run in lmin 4Sscc.
Dame Straitlace, with a good weight up, covered a m’le in lmin 64see. Gocsestep easily beat Revel over six furlongs, run in lmin 24sec. Viewpoint strode over half a mile in 55sce.
Red Wink and King Alf finished on terms, with the former going the ter, over half a mile run in 53 2-ssec. There was nothing to choose between Mudlark and Relic as they crossed the line after leaving six furlongs behind in lmin 22 3-s.sea. •Joyeuse sprinted four furlongs along the hack in 53 2-ssec. Limelight, jumping away from the one and three-quarter mile post, went steadilv over the first part, covering the full distance in 3min Msec. Starm.ist covered nine furlongs in 2min 22 2-ssec.
Solfanello and Ferino galloped six furlongs in linin 23sec. Oarpent-ier. beginning slowly, cov--ored five furlongs in lmin Dscc, finishing well. Warseer and Kilcannach were companions over five furlongs, run in lmin 6 2-osec. Winkie’s Best and Moorland were to have gone together, hut the latter broke away and went on His own. He covered six furlongs in lmin 21 I—s sec. going well. Boadicea easily accounted for Ophir over six furlongs in lmin 22 4-sxcc.
Tc Anau Lad was under a strong pull all the way to keep him with Winkie’s Rebel over seven furlongs, run in lmin 43scc. Finora, assisted over. the last four furlongs, galloped five furlongs in lmin! 7 2-osee. He accomplished his task well. Gyrene sprinted three furlongs along the hack in -10 1-oscc. —Special.

Goldfields in their first innings made 42—Foulson 13. GJilligan took two wickets for nine, Tate three for 8, Freeman five for 18, and -Kilner three for 1.
Each side then had a short knock, England closing three for 111 and Goldfields seven for 52. The match was drawn.
SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. VICTORIA v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA ADELAIDE, Nov. I. In a Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, South Australia, in their first innings, scored three for 263. Harris 93, Murray 126, V. Richardson (not out) 29. A splendid partnership by Harris and Murray added 205 for the first wicket, which is a. record in matches between these teams. Victoria has lost two wickets for 32—May ne 12. The weather was fine and the wicket good. Richardson and Grimmett gave a sparkling display, punishing the play. Richardson was flawless, excepting one hard liance.—U.P.A. ROWING. GISBORNE CLUBA meeting of the Gisborne Rowing Club was hold on Friday evening, Mr H. C. Fraser presiding. A letter,, was received from the. East Coast Rowing Association and the affiliation fee of £2 15s was passed for payment. Tho resignations of Messrs. C. McCoy and G. J. Parker was accepted with regret. The following new members were elected: V. D’A. Blackburn, W. F. Staff, H. Chicotfc, R. Hanna, H. O’Donnell, C. E. Lees, R. W. Davy a, S. G. M. Geomati, H. F. Hamilton. It was decided to draw tho crews for tho first Trial Fours during the week-end and all members possible ore asked to add their names to. the fist. The races for this cvcf.t are to start on Saturday, November 15th, from the Roebuck Road bridge, for Mr R. J. Clarke’s trophies.

The following sub-committcc» was 1 elected to revise the rules governing competition and membership of tho club; Messrs. A. W. Mason, O. F. Paltridge and J.\ Pollock. In the schoolboys’ competition lor Mr P. . Roberts’ medal, for ...most points, it was decided that, in addition to the primary schools, that the High School pupils up to the sixth standard b.o allowed to compete. A resolution was carried inipower* ing the starter or marksman to penalise any competitor appearing in any event unless properly attired in club costume. Mr R. J. Pel low was elected a member of the club.
