MINISTER OPPOSES SPECIAL BOARD. -
WHY' SOUTH ISLAND TRUNK LINE IS BEING DEFERRED.
WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. Replying: to criticism by tho Leader of tho Opposition, to-night, the Hon. Mr. Coates said that it would lie impossible to have a Railways Board, “l'n regard to the construction of railways it would be a bad example to appoint a Board. The individual Minister must, from his own opinion, after getting all the necessary information, be able to satisfy the public whether, the expenditure was justified on a line or otherwise. ,f.n regard to the Main Trunk line in the South .Island, ho had got all the information and would make it public next year and show why the time had not yet arrived for that line to be constructed. There were more attractive propositions that should be dealt with just now. Tho South Island Alain Trunk line was desirable from the main trunk jjoint of view, hut it would not open up much country. In time it would also be necessary to have the Glenhope connection. The Wostport-In-ai'.gahau line was one ol the most important because- it would connect up a valuable coal system. As to political.lines he did not know of one political line that was under construetimi to-day.—Spccia 1.
