There was an enormous attendance. Several New Zealanders, the Governor-General, the State Governor, ; and the Governor of N'.S.W. were amongst those present. .Motellus led all the way in the Maiden Plate and wen easily. A great race was witnessed in the Marbyrnong Plate. Manacre was always prominent and won narrowly. He cost 210 guineas. Manaore had had two wins and a second in three starts. H. Dempsey rode Metellus and Manacre. Gloaming was cheered with great •enthusiasm on entering the course. He looked a winner below the distance and came up on the outside. The first two furlongs were covered in 27J-see, the next two in 24-|sec, and the succeeding two in the same time. The last mile was covered jn lmin 39.) see. Spearfelt registered the easiest win ever witnessed in the Derby. Spearfelt’s trainer is an ex-New Zealander. Vincent O’Neill, and he was ridden by George Young, who also won the Melbourne Stakes. Spearfelt was loudly cheered. Spearfelt has 7.G in the Melbourne Cup. There was a good race in the Cantala Stakes. Night Patrol led for the last six furlongs and won narrowly. Black Adder v/as fifth. FI. Dempsey rode Lilypond. He scored three wins and two seconds. Brimming was first away in the Derby and led out of the straight from Sir Dighlook. Spearfelt began nono too well. Sir Dighleck took charge at the mile, then followed Brimming and Artamus, with Spearfelt eighth and Royal Charter second to last. Spearfelt improved his position at the six furlongs'and was second at the half-mile. Spearfelt- them headed the pacemaker, Sir Dighlook, and drew away in the straight, winning easy. Royal Charter finished well. Versinc was a, fair third, then came Sir Dighlook, Brimming, Wvcherly, Artamus and Solidify, with King Victor last. Results: Maiden Plate. —Metullus 8.1, 1; Prince Florizel S.G, 2; Prif.ce Minimhali S.B, 3. Nineteen started. Won by three lengths, with a nook between second and third. Time: lmin 41’,see 1 . Maribvrnong Plate.—Manacre 8.10, I; Petunia 8 10, 2; Siege 8.10, 3. Thirteen started. Won by a, head, with three lengths between second and third. Time : lmin 21scc. Melbourne Stakes. Gloaming, 9.0 (G. Young) 1 Whittier, 9.0 (F. Dempsey) 2 Easingwold, 3.3 (Harrison)...- 3 —Easingwold and Whittier led early, with Gloaming third. Gloaming took charge in the straight and won easily by three-quarters of a length, with two lengths between second and third. Time: 2min sJscc. Gloaming had a great reception, V.R.C. Derby. Spearfelt (G. Young) 1 Royal. Charter, 8.10 (F. Dempsey) 2 Versine 8.5 (It. Lewis) 3 —Twelve started. Won by six lengths; two lengths between second and third. Time: 2min 35scc. GLOAMING’S WINNINGS' (Received Nov. 3. 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 1. Gloaming’s winnings now total £40,760. J. M. Cameron, trainer of The Hawk, was lined £lO in connection with the horse weighing in short in the Cantala Stakes.

Spearfelt’s trainer, Vincent O’Neill, is a native of Hastings.

Gloaming looked well when walking at Flemington to-day.
