AMALGAMATED WIRELESS

ANNUAL MEETING IN AUSTRALIA. WHAT THE BEAM SYSTEM HOLDS FORTH. United Press Association—Copyright. (Received Oct. 31, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 31. A.t the annual meeting of the Amalgamated Wileless (Australasia) Ltd., in an address the chairman, Mr Masson Allard, referred to the financial loss resulting from the chaotic conditions arising through differences of opinion among various interests concerning the controlling of broadcasting. it was to be sincerely hoped that the enthusiasm and energy of a large number of new comers into the wireless trading field in the future would be concentrated in the direction of stabilising the situation and building up public confidence in it. Dealing with the matter of the change from high power to -the beam system he said that although the delay resulting from the change had been irritating, contributing in r.o small measure lo the unpleasant financial results, it would no doubt prove a blessing in disguise, by giving the public a better service and saving the company more money than it had lost and giving it a larger revenue and. earning capacity. Under the beam system they would bo able to handle all classes of messages between hero mifl jvngland at cheaper rates and with a great or greater promptitude. He expressed the belief that the press would welcome the reduction in rates which the company hoped to offer on messages between Australia and England. This should be a factor in assisting greater overseas pub'icity. Mr Fisk, managing director, cctaiiing the experiments in conjunction with Marconi with the beam system made, said they had proved eminently successful and highly encouraging. It was not possible at present to publish the results but, probably, Marconi would do so shortly. He considered the new system would give us something so far superior to the old that the high power stations would eventually become obsolescent. The new system would not be limited.to the hours of darkness for successful operation but lie believed the day was not far distant when they would operate uninterruptedly throughout the twenty-four hours. The report dealing with the trading loss made.by the subsidiary company established for the manufacture of electrical goods says that the d rectors have decided, owing to the rap.dly extending activities of genuine wireless work, *tliat attention must in future be concentrated on wireless alone and the business of the auxiliary company must, as soon as possible, be transferred to other hands. It is believed that’ this alteration can be made w thout seriously disturbing the company's business. —U.P.A.
