Tire- opening event, the Matawhero Handicap, has attracted a good field. Rowley, who won with a lot in hand on Thursday, should not be troubled seriously on account of the distance being an extra furlong, although General Carrington’s chances are not to ~ he despised. In the Second Hurdles the field will he very weak and for Silver’fish the race eertainlv looks tho best of good things, though Sweet Heather will not lark plenty of followers. The _ Juvenile Stakes should he a most interesting event. Nancy Lee veil 1 probably be first choice, but Nightsong.is well liked in some quarters.
There veil be a small field for the principal event —the Makaraka Handicap—in which Gaze should be favorite though Correspondent has an excellent charice of success. A more than average field will contest the Maiden Hack Handicap. TV haikorero made a creditable showing on Thursday and can be expect*’ 1 to do even better to-day. 'Maim Paugo will also be well in* the public fa.rrcv.
The Waikanr.e Handicap should arouse a lot of interest, but it will probably be found to resolve itself into a tussle between Koodoo and Startle, with the latter most in demand as it may be thought that Koodoo’s extra weight may prove troublesome.
.The TYrimata Hack Flat Handicap will see the biggest field of the day. Killock should be first choice, with - Mangatoetoe and Princess Ngata also in keen demand.
The Farewell Handicap will produce a, satisfactory field. HeatherSprig should attract most attention. Followers of Jovial, however, will •reckon that lie is due for a win todav.
