RUGBY UNION BALL.

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION The annual ball of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, held in the City Hall last evening, attracted a large gathering of dancers and the function was an outstanding success. The Hall was prettily decorated, the decorations of :he Hunt Ball having been kindly loaned to the Rugby Union for tiie occasion and, with the numerous pretty frocks the scene was very gay. The decorations of the supper room were also tastefully arranged, and much credit is due to the Rugby Union dance committee and to Mrs Parker and her lady assistants who worked hard to made the dance a success. The floor was in good order and the music supplied by Mrs Thompson’s orchestra made -for a very enjoyable evening. During an interval, Mr and Mrs K. S. Williams attended the function and presented the trophies -won during tho year. In presenting the trophies, Mr Williams said that lie was pleased to be- present on that occasion. It was recognised that Rugby' was New Zealand’s national game and he thught it reflected much credit on Gisborne that there were so many public-spirited men here to donate the trophies. He congratulated the Union and the players generally on the successful .year. The winning teams are as follows : Cooper Cup: Celtic Seniors. Senior Championship Cup: Old Boys. Junior Championship Cup: Higli School. Third Grade Championship Cup: Rovers. '•Thursday Ompefition Cup: Watcrsider.s. A presentation was also made in Mr G. Scott, a Celtic in recognition of his splendid services rendered while a member of the Poverty Bay representative team ' for many years.

The services rendered by Airs Pi 1cliff in the interests of Rugby in the Bay were also suitable recognised, when the chairman of the Union, Mr A>. S. Parker, presented her wir-h a silver howl on behalf of the Union. He said that Mrs Billcliff had been a hard worker for the game in the Bay and it was fitting that the’. Union should recognise her services in this way. N"
