SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS

MEETING OF LOCAL BRANCH. One of the most successful and well attended meetings cf the local branch of the S.A. Veterans’ Association was held in the Liberty Ha'l on Tuesday evening last, the president (Mr W, Brechin) presiding over a gathering that had served in the Royal Artillery, cavalry, mounted rifles and infantry branches of England. Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia, South Africa and also of this Dominion.

The chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, said that the association, though suffering like every other nod/ from the prevailing depression, was still in a live condition. After further discussion the report and bal-ance-sheet were unanimously adopted.

Correspondence of a lengthy nature was dealt with, amongst wh eh was a telegram from Mr W. D. Lvsnar, M.P., containing information with reference to recent legislation and Pensions Act passed in favor of South African Veterans, it was decided to hold the annual rc-im.'on during the races in February next, the actual date to be fixed by' the executive. The first Sunday in June is to he observed as a Memorial or Peace Day 7, when it is hoped to have a parade of members at one of the local chin ches.

The. number of applications for membership since the advert..semen £. in the press had been very good. The secretary also reported that lie had at times received applications, to join from those who were in sympathy with our aims and objects, but had not the necessary qualifications, and, alter discussion, it was decided to admit such gentlemen as lion, members. Some most flattering remarks were passed upon the work of the lion. sec. in tho interests of the local branch and it was resolved that, at the next: re-union, a suitable presentation he inado to him.

A vote of thanks to the outgoing officers was carried w : th acelamat o.'i, and the election of officers was then proceeded with, when the following gentlemen wore elected: Prsident, Mr J. B. Poyntcr ; vice-president, Mr J. Hurrey: lion. sec. and treasurer, Air J. V. Scott; executive, Messrs. Hughes, Williams, Taylor, Parker, Pascoe, Breingan, Stokes. AlcLach’nn, and Sergt.-Major Booth ; lion, auditor, Air D. H. Faram ; delegate to Dominion executive, Wellington, Rev. A. H. Compton.
