FEDERAL DEFENCE

SUBAIARINE CRUISERS TO BE BUILT. SYDNEY, Oct. 28. Tho Minister for Defence, Mr Bowden, announced that tenders for the construction in Great Britain of two modern submarine cruisers, with a cruising radius of three thousand miles had been called by the Federal Ministry. The work of construction, it is considered, is too specialised to be carried out locally. It is also doubted whether, owing to the secrecv attached to the plans and specifications, the. British Admiraltv would allow construction from its plans to he undertaken in dockyards other than those with which it is in close touch When Afr Bruce was in England it was estimated that the cost of each submarine would lie £3-30,000. — T7.P.A.
