The savings bank returns for the, September quarter show that the deposits in Gisborne totalled £ 190,064, and 1 the withdrawals £150,024. In most other centres the withdrawals exceeded the deposits.

On Friday of this week at 11 a.m., the auction sale of Nelson’s wellknown Tarulieru property will be held in the Masonic Hotel Buildings, Gladstone Road. The property has been sub-divided into 39 blocks, of which 32 will he offered at auction. At the monthly meeting of the Gisborne Prohibition League, the J allowing resolution was unanimously adopted: “That the Gisborne Prohibition League respectfully requests the New Zealand Alliance Standing Committee to use every influence of Parliament to prevent the proposals of the committee of the House, re granting licenses in the King Country and the distribution of licenses from towns where they are not needed to progressive towns and centres ot populations; also to strenuously oppose anv extensions of the time betwen the taking of the Prohibition elections.”
Two bluejackets carried t-lie late Admiral Percy Scott’s cremated remains aboard the destroyer Truant on Friday last. The urn was placed in the stern .and • covered with a Union Jack. The licet dipped ensigns. After a simple service the urn Was dropped overboard near Nab lighthouse. The arrangements were that the remains of the late Admiral Sir Percy Scott would he cremated on Thursday, after a. funeral service at St. Margaret’s, Westminster. A cruiser was then to t.a.ke the ash.es of the deceased Admiral 20 miles off the Nab lighthouse. There they were to be committed to tlie sea with . full naval honors.
The wow schedule of salaries of senior officers of the New Zealand Military Forces has been issued. The chief ‘grades are:—Major-General, £lOOl per annum, rising to £1092 after one year: colonel or colonelcommandant. £765, rising by stages to £791 in the fourth wear; lieutenant colonel, £630 to £730: major, £490 to £590; captain, £385 to £455; lieutenant, £290 to £355; second lieutenant, £290 to £355. The pay for non-commissioned' officers is scheduled as follows: —Warrant officer, Class 1, £315 single £345 married; warrant officer, class 2, £295 single, £320 married; staff sergeant-instruc-tor, £270 and £295; sniff sergeant, £245 .and £275.
Anticipating the sanctioning of the Cook County 1 oan proposals, the Public Work’s Department staff are engaged on surveys for formation work on the East Const road. . A number of small deviations in tho present roads are to be made, avid are now being “pegged out,” so that in tho event of the loan being carried the metalling operations will, not bo hold np on account of formation work. Metal for the road Ist to bo obtained from. WhaWgara Island, and it is probable that a track will bo made from the road leading to tho island 1 to a point on the main road some distance below the Whangara hotel. Although this track will necessitate the construction of a bridge about 70 foot long, it would result in a saving in distance of about a mile and a half in the haulage of tlie spawls.
