"DON'T BE A BARMAID !"
W.C.T.U. WRITES APPLICANTS. SOME REPLY; OTHERS SILENTSYDNEY, Oct. 16. The activities of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union include endeavors to persuade young women from taking employment as barmaids. At the W.C.T.U. Convention this afternoon Miss M. Sayers, State Superintendent. for this branch of work, reported that in the past year 100 letters were written in reply to advertisements in the papers on behalf of girls seeking positions as learners in the 'bar. It was stated that the replies received showed that most of the writers wished for different employment, and some had obtained other positions. In regard to the Newcastle dist- . riot, Mrs E. Willgoo.se reported that ..seven letters were written pleading with young women not to take up bar work. “But so many do not even reply,” added the report. In one case, however, other employment was found for a young, woman who liad intended to become a barmaid.
