SWEPT FROM TREES

100 PRIESTS DROWNED

TRAGEDY OF FLOODS

CALCUTTA, Oct. 14

The most remarkable of the many stories regarding the grave hoods which have devastated large tracts of southern and northern India during the present monsoons, comes from a very reliable correspondent at Hardwar, in the United Provinces, which is an ancient holy retreat for thousands of Hindu priests and their disciples. Without warning the holy colony found their huts inundated by floods, which, continually rising, compelled them to take refuge in trees, drowning over a hundred priests and their disciples. Heavy damage was done to the residences and the college of the priesthood.
