LONDON FINANCE AND COMCIA L. BANK OF ENGLAND RETURNS. (United Press Association -Copyright.) (Received Julv 23. 5.5 p.m.) . LONDON, J uly 23. The Bank of England returns for the week ending Wednesday, July 21, compare, with the returns for the previous week as under:— ,

.Proportion of reserve to liabilities: July 21, 18.09 per cent; July 14. 17.57 per cent. The large changes in deposits and securities are due to subscriptions to the war loan. THE MONEY MARKET. Short loans are quoted at 4.) per cent, as against 3 per cent last week. The discount rate for three months’ bills is 5 per cent, being unchanged since last week. CONSOLS AND COLONIAL STOCKS Consols are quoted at £65, being unaltered since last week. Following are the quotations for Colonial Government stocks:—

Buyers £2l 10s; sellers £24 15s. Silver.— Bar silver is .-.noted at 22 7-16 d per ounce standard. SUGAR, Sugar is steadv and unchanged. DATRY PRODUCE, Danish butter is very firm owing to a strong demand from Germany and Holland, where Foot and .Mouth Disease is prevalent. Colonial supplies are practically exhausted. -Australian is nominally 13Ss to 1425. Cheese is very slow. New Zealand 76s to 78s : Queensland .71s to 765. CEREALS. Wheat- is cuiet and steady. Flour is firmer. Oats are steady. New Zealand 375; Bahia-Blanea Julv-August 25s 3d. Peatis and beans are firm at full prices. p THE WOOL MARKETS. (United Press Association- •■Co-;yright.) (Received July 23, ->.5 p.m.) LONDON. July 23. At the wool sales there was a keener demand and general competition and an all-round hardening in values, except for shabbies. The following prices were realised for tho fleece portions of the New Zealand clips named : Tokomaru. top price, 17kl, average IGJd; Gerald 14d and 12d. 'Hie sale included 1213 bales of English wool, which was mostly withdrawn. Washed Hamoshire Downs fetched 23d and greasy 16-kl. The Bradford market is steadier with a more cheerful tone. Sixtyfour’s are quoted at 42d, super 60’s 41kl. common 60’s 4(kl, 56’s 35d, 50’s 31d, 45’s 27d, 40’s 25d.
