-AX EFFECTIVE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. CONVINCING DEMONSTRATIONS IN GISBORNE. No little interest was taken yesier<iay afternoon in the demonstrations S'veil of the value of the Pyrene Fire Extinguisher in quelling sudden outbreaks of tire. The demonstration's, which were undertaken lm .Mr 0,. J. Long, merchandise manager for Messrs .). .J. Niven and Co., who hold the sole ggeney for .Pyrene for Poverty Bay, were given on a vacant section at the corner of Customhouse- and Kahutia Streets, in the presence of engineers, taxi-drivers and business men.

The apparatus, which holds a quart of liquid, is so compactly built that it can be carried in one’s nocketj The preparation is very simple to handle, and its effectiveness was proved beyond all shadow of doubt. Mr Long first ignited a tin of hissing carbide, and attempted to suppress the outbreak with another brand ot fire extinguisher. The Pyrene pump was then brought into operation and two small ejections wen* sufficientto completely quench the fire.' A quantity of petrol was then placed in a tin and ignited. r \ lie flames blazed up furiously, hut- were quickly suppressed by a, few streams of Pyrene. A quantitiy of cotton waste was then saturated with petrol, and set alight. Though allowed to get well alight before the Pyrene was applied, less than half a pint of the liquid proved effective. The almost instantaneous effect of the now lire extinguisher was all tile more remarkable in that a strong wind was blowing’yesterday, which helned to fan the flames. Those present wore so impressed with the demonstrations given that several orders . were placed with Mr Long on the spot. The Pyrene extinguisher should prove a great boon to taxi-drivers and owners of motor ears, as several ears have been destroyed in this district lately,'which most likely would have been easily saved had a Pyrene pump been carried. _ One advantage about the liquid contained in the Pyrene extinguisher is that it has no injurious effect upon clothing or furniture.
