ROADING TAUWHAREPARAE.
HARBOR BOARD TENANT'S PLEAD FOR ACCESS TO THEIR HOLDINGS.
The vexed question of reading the Tauwhareparao endowment block, which has given tlio Harbor Board a good deal of concern of late, again cropped up at the meeting yesterday. A letter was received from the Cook County Council suggesting that a conference should be held between representatives "of the Cook and Waiapu County Councils and the Harbor Board regarding the putting of the main Coast road through the bio k. Mr J. M.‘ Arundel waited upon the .Board regarding road access to his section on the Tauwlni reparae endowment block. Mr Arundel said that it was hbont time that ho was given access. A scheme was nroposed to effect an exchange of properties between the Cook and Yvaianu counties, hut this had-been turned down by the Cook County Council. The latter body, he said, did nothing to the roads up. there, but yet wanted to collect the rates'. The road which had been formed was going lo rack and rui u on account of no rurfa. omau being employed. At present ho could only get to his section on horseback. He was dependent on neighbors for the use of it voobhed, dip, ok-. He paid the Board close upon £5(21 a year rent, and yet tiiev had not yet given him access. Another .2200 would, complete 2i i reading. He had made an offer to cum pinto . the rand Into his
section for £25-9, but the Board had turned down the offer, it was unjust that; the Board should- take rent, and yet give him no road to his section. The Board wanted their rent-, and thev wanted their road.
The Chairman- said . lie thought- it was only fair that thev should give Air Arundel access. If no satisfactory arrangement could be < omo to between the Cook and YYeirpu counties, the Board should put the road into Air Arundel’s property. ■ Afr Lvsriar said that the intention of the Cook -County Council was to hold a conference between members of the Cook and AVaiapu County Councils and the Harbor Board to see it ftio road could not be put right through the block. J.f this were done the members of the Tologa Bav riding were agreeable to contribute their share or the cost from the riding' funds.
Mr Preston : Arc we compelled under the terms of the lease to give Mr Arundel road access? Mr L.vsnar : We are.
’Pile Chairman said that a lease was not a lease until road access was given. Air White moved that the Board grant £250 to carry out the loading lo iUr Arundel’s section. Mr AYifcters said it would not be wise (o make an offer of this kind. The counties would shelter under such an offer., if it was the duty of the Cook or AYaiapu county to make the road they should do it. 11 the Board did the work they would he simply mailing a sympathy vote. It was not a question' of sympathy hut of business. Air Arundel: Pardon me, Air Witters; it is not a question oi sympathy hut of light. Mr J. Sheridan also waited upon, the Board, and complained that lowa s the lessee of section 12. comprising 1 SCO acres, and had no road <i any kind whatever into his holding, lie had spent between. £SOOO and £6OO-0 on improvements. In order to get to his section lie Ini’d to pass through a neighbor’s property, and
this owner had threatened io block him. About two and a-half miles oi ron.d required to he made. The Board was bound to make tiny road beiore tile countv would take it over. He was advised that there was no necessity for him to pay rent until he "as given road access. The Chairman said that they had made an arrangement with Mr Buscko to give access to Air Sheridan’s section. There was some misunderstanding somewhere. Air Hheridau said all he had was a small bridle track, and he wanted a road. Ho had a fully improved section in the hack blocks, with no means of getting into it-- He had spentclose on £6OOO, and could not- get a title until he had a road. I h<- Government was spending 0100 bn the road, and lie wanted ihc Board to make a grant to assist what the Government was doing. Ho was asking no favor, hut only what he was legally entitled to. The Chairman said that the matter would ho inquired into, and Air Shot idan advised of their decision. Mr Arundel, in reply to Mr L.vsnar. said that the roads which the llarbor Board had formed and handed over to the Cook County Council, were simply being ruined through no. surfaceman being employed on. them. The deputation then withdrew. Mr Wallis said that he and _ the Chairman were appointed a committee to go into the reading at .lauwhaicparae, and report to the Board. 1 hey had placed several plans before the Board, and recommendations had been made to the Cook County Council on the subject. The Council had now written suggesting a conference on the ■subject. He could not say whether the Board when leasing the sections had contracted to make a- dray road into every section. He could, however. say from hig personal knowledge that if the Tauwhareparao block remained in Cook County there would ho dual control. He (the speaker) had e-ot Mr O’Rvun, engineer to the Waiapu County Council .to draft out a scheme which would he equitable to both counties, and if this had been adopted everyone would have been satisfied. He moved that the. matters brought foiyjjjrd by the deputations be referred.-;,® Joe Tauwhareparao Roads J it appeared, to him ;-H>n, which WPS onrrb-d.
