ENG INKER’S REPORT
The Engineer-Secretary (Air J. A. AlcDonakl) reported as follows: “Dredging.—During this month two dredger Aiaui has been working solely on the blasted rock in the entranc** channel. .She has lifted and deposited at sea 13.00'1 tons or blasted rock. "The dredging or blasted rock <• '• tlie breakwater side of the entrance channel to loft below low water was completed on Triday. July 16. thus giving a channel of 190i’t wide and 15ft deep at low water, with the exception of a small p;ueh near the shore end of the old breakwater which was particularly hard and has been dredged to ,14ft Gin. or Gin short of the full loft. “The moorings are now being laid up stream of the coal hunker, and a start will then be made to dredge the breakwater side of the entrance channel to 20: r below low water. Later a second set of moorings will be laid at the seaward cud of this section of the channel. In fine weather the dredge will work on this latter set of moorings and dredge inwards to 20ft deep, and in bad weather she will work on the former set of moorings and dredge outwards to 20ft. deep. “The dredger John Townley has lifted and deposited at sea 36 loads, taken from around the wharves.
“Drilling and Blasting.—During the month work has been continued on the third or last lift oil the breakwater side of the entrance channel, drilling and blasting to 23ft below low water. One hundred and thirty-three holes have been drilled and 111 holes have been blasted.
“General Work.—The minor works during the month include renewing fenders to town wharf, levelling and fencing depot at hack of blacksmith's shop, repairs to sheds _ and trucks, breaking stone and coaling Aiaui. “Soundings.—The entrance channel. with beacons open a little to the eastward, is stiil maintaining _ its depth of "loft at low water (Admiralty). There is a slight shoaling between the slip and No. 3 station on the groyne side, and also in the centre of the inner basin opposite the Harbor Board's offices. . This latter is due to slight, freshes in tho river.” ' CASH STATEMENT.
