The “Trade and Labor Gazette states that the increasing number oi enlistments and the ‘active demand tor Jabor owing to Uio reqiiiromontN of the Allies have caused a shortage oi labor in many industries, and theio is now very little unemployment, except. in a. ’ few “luxury” and other trades which are adversely affected by the war. The transference from one trade to another and the substitution of female for male labor is extending. The “Gazette” declares that employment- in a majority .of the tries is perfectly satisfactory. 11m May returns show that the number of men applying for work decreased by 70 per cent, and females applying for work increased by 50 per cent. The Labor Bureau reports that the employment of women is enormous.\ increasing. . . . Retail food prices m Britain are steadily advancing. Compared wit.n 1911 beef has increased 40 per cent., sugar 68 per cent., fish 64 per cent., flour 50 per cent., bread 40 per emit., and tea 28 per cent-. . Berlin food prices bare meroaseu 65 per cent. . , ' In Vienna beef lias increased HU* per cent,, eggs 167 per cent., bacon--162 per cent., rice 1-5 nor cent., and bread S 3 per cent.
