NURSES EXAMINATIONS.

WHY ARE THEY NOT HELD IN GISBORNE ?

Dr Valentine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, wrote to the Hospital Board as follows:

“In reply to your letter requesting to know the cost of conducting nurses’ examination in Gisborne, and stating that your Board was prepared to guarantee any deficitshould future examinations be arranged to take place there. I beg to inform you that the question of expense is not the main feature to be considered. The aim of tile Department in requiring nurses to attend for examination at the larger centres and in limiting the number of these centres as mudi ns possible has been, to ensure uniformity ol standard, as far as that can be accomplished. Your Board will doubtless understand that it is in the best interests of flic nurses themselves that tho welcome for the conducting of the State examinations, which has been carefully tirought out, should not bo interfered -with.’’ Dr Porter: That is very thin. It is a peculiar argument that if one nurse is going up it lowers the standard, whereas if three or four go up for examination it raises the standard. , , J)r Collins moved that the Department- be thanked for the letter, and the Board asks to be supplied witn the cost of conducting the examinations in Gisborne, which bad not been nnsweredjjy the Inspector-General ot Hospitals. This was agreed to.
