THE KAISER’S GIFT.
HAND OF THE DECEIVER
In tho last week of July last the Kaiser made a present to the University of London of 67 books. Referring to this, Lord Rosebery, who presided at the Presentation Day proceedings, said: ' In the last week of July his Majesty the German Emperor, out of the fulness of his beneficent heart, was pleased to send us a present of books, for which we arc duly grateful. Within a day or two he was sending out ultimatums in Europe wlii h deliberately lib up this horrible scene of disaster, savagery and slaughter. ‘ Therefore, whatever our gratitude may bo for the books, they were the damned spot that wo remember on tho hand of Lady Macbeth. Tlicro is ono counterbalancing advantage even m this tremendous evil, which certainly this university cannot ignore. There has been such an uprising of the nation and such a fervor of patriotic spirit as many of us hardly hoped ever to see in Great Britain again. And not merely in Great Britain, but all over this world-wide Empire, that patriotism is blessed in its fullest di velopment. “I cannot endure the talk of those armchair politicians who discourse about apathy of the nation in regard to the war. WTTat nation is history h as C ver raised over 2,000,000 men i« a few-monthsi by voluntary service and is willing to spend over £2.000.000 a day as long as they have £2,000,000 to spend in order to fortify their armaments in the field? Let those who feel the apathy stand forth. 1 for one soe no sighs of such in my country.
