NOT EATING PRISONERS YET.

Bourko Cochran is reported to have said: “In three generations there will be no prisoners.”

He means (writes “New York Lite ) siich prisoners as we send to Sing Sing, but what of prisoners of Avar? Does Mr Cochran think, as some persons do, that the Germans will presently conclude that, under existing circumstances, the right tiling for them to do Avith war prisoners is to eat them?

Nothing but custom stands against the practice of eating prisoners of Avar. It AA'fis done in the South Seas loss than two centuries ago, and is doubtless still done in parts of Africa. But one thing that the German seems to have set out to exterminate is the customs of civilisation. Since last August they have risen superior to prejudice in. respect to pretty much every restraint that modern civilisation had connected with Avar except cannibalism. There has been no report as yet of their eating prisoners, but as a people they have not yet been very hungry. But Avlien they begin to eat prisoners avo shall know it. .They will not conceal it. Thoy avIU glory in it, justas they did in the sinking of the Lusitania, as a last triumph of their Ivultur and a final proof of Teutonic superiority.
